Go to machine mart and buy a clarke one.Ive got the 150amp one and its brilliant for car bodywork. If you can wait and have bought from there before they do vat free weekends now and then so you can save 20%.

Was covered about a month ago (and pretty much every month ) Here is the last one: Beginners welding equipmentI'd say get a portamig and you'll never look back, but they are about £600! Worth every penny though....ask anyone who has one, especialy people who have owned other welders before getting one. ;D

Failing that Clarke 150, make it earn it's keep and then upgrade later Whatever you do do not buy from an oriental source or SIP - nothing but pain waits for you there

i bought a gasless mig (sip) for my rebuild. its done the job and all is strong and welded, even managed to do the bodywork too although not easy or tidy...........spend as much as you can, don't buy a gasless like i did and listen to the above comments buy a good one and be glad you did. I'm saving for a good gas mig. you can buy cheap but youll regret it every weld you do.

I`ve had a Clarke gasless for years and because i only use it occasionally its ideal for me. No gas bottles to worry about ect.
I can always convert it to gas if i needed.
I think if your doing lots of welding then get a gas one or a dual one like me.

I am currently using a sealey 150 amp one, and it is fairly good (now I have got my head around gas flows a bit better). It has a reasonably consistent wire feed, but the lowest power setting is a little bit too high for thin metal. Easy to blow holes if you feed in too much gas.

P.s. what everyone else says, buy the best you can and avoid cheep non-brand type products.

Bruce is a bad/good influence, depending on how you look at it ;D I wouldn't swap my Portamig (actually branded MTA on mine, but that's splitting hairs..) for anything. It came in at £530ish, £600 by the time you sort gas and wire but I had had a couple cheap welders before and the biggest difference was in the consistency of the wire feed and ability to control it at lower powers. However, I was lucky enough to be in a position to be able to abuse my credit card to stretch my budget and was really comfortable using Bruce's Portamig so knew it was 100% what I wanted. It's all very well telling you to double your budget but if the money isn't there... I have heard nobody say a bad word about Clarke as good entry level welders. I'd be looking at this one. It already comes with a regulator to use proper bottles, which you'll soon want to use when you figure out how much the throw away ones cost!
