I fugging love this car! I popped to Romans, the insanely posh garage on the A217 the other week. They had a CLK GTR, which I guess is the spiritual successor to this fella. In short, a totally insane road legal racer: lower than sleeping with your mates lady, meaner than Tyson on a bad day and I'd imagine harder to live with than a bunch of lasses. www.romansinternational.com/module/romansInt_cars?carDetails=397&offer=

Porsche 924 - gone Citroen Saxo VTR - not very retro but I loved it - now gone... MK4 Golf GTi 1.8T - gone but hardly remembered... Mini Cooper S R53 - gone BMW 125d Coupe - gone (mostly sideways)
Ford Focus RS Mk1 - hello low MPGs and "wanna race me" at every set of lights... 1973 BMW 2002 - Twin 40's, 284 Cam, Revolutions, E21 Recaros + more Porsche Cayman 987 3.4S - here and due to cost me more money than I have

IIRC, they had active aero, flaps which closed off the brake cooling ducts in the front bumper to reduce drag, but they were controled by a timer so they'd open and close at pre set points on a lap. Problem was if you had a spin or a bad lap the timer wasn't set up to be adjustable so they would then open and close at the wrong points! Gotta love the Germans for their inability to acknowledge human error.
Fantastic race cars, one of the best articles I've read in evo, I've still got it somewhere.

Actually, after trying to remember the story and studying the pics, I think Merc may have trailed the active aero flaps but abandoned it after a few races because drivers couldn't achieve consistent enough lap times over a whole race so it threw the timing of the flaps closing out. I think the system was quicker over a lap but slower over a whole race. (a whole race being made up of non consistent laps)

My Sunday this weekend was spent nursing a rather bad hangover watching the DTM on the TV and all I could think about was this car thanks for putting these pictures up!
