Let's fill in some gaps from last week... ;D In the mid 1970’s, British Leyland fielded four XJCs, prepared by Ralph Broad's Broadspeed racing team. These cars had radically modified bodywork and race-prepared 550 hp Broadspeed V12s. The suspension was still basically the XJ design, but with uprated double coil springs and shocks. The coupes were extensively modified on the inside and the exterior shell was lightened. Unfortunately, the Broadspeed cars were utter failures in terms of race wins but often were extremely fast on the tracks setting record qualifying times. The first cars suffered from oil starvation problems, tyre and drive shaft failures. This, combined with a string of mechanical reliability problems, resulted in loss after loss. This losing streak, in conjunction with lack of long term BL financial commitment , eventually forced the retirement of the cars and the team after a very short racing career. Later on though, privateers were quite successful once the initial problems of the car were worked out. And on a civvy street tangent, here's John Steed hooning a replica one (kayfabe) around a track: Some more info (and some bad grammar) here.

Octane or Classic and Sportscar did a huge feature on this car last year - interviews with D.Bell and Andy Rouse too. I'll try to dig it out.

Four pipes out the side. Sorry, four pipes out of both sides ;D Its a great car because the basic bodystyle was just so cool too. The UK didn't make many 2 door pillarless cars and here's one all done up o go fast too!

There were 4 built - 3 were returned to Jaguar, number 2 stayed with Broadspeed. It was sold by Bonhams in 2009 needing some work for £80,700 - all complete with original 19 inch wheels, 5.4 560bhp V12 etc... not sure who the lucky owners are though?
Another chap was building a replica to use on track - Rob Beere racing were doing a 7.3 V12 for it last I heard!

Sadly no (or if they have got one they're hiding it away). I believe there's one at JD Classics alongside TWR and Group 44 XJSs.

Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust have one, but its been out the way for a while. Chris Scragg was running another one in the Historic Touring Car recently.

i would like to comment on the subject there are some things not totaly correct fist of all broadspeed dídn't make 4 cars they made 3 cars - the 1976 car ( see the pic's at the top of this page ) this was the car they used in 1976 but only raced it once , after that they used it as a test car to test parts on for the 1977 season they build 2 new cars that where acid dipped and therefore lighter than the 76 car lots of changes where made to the cars and in basic you can say they look like the road car but underneath they are totaly difrent the car in the photo's is the 1976 car that was restored 2 years ago by m & c wilkinson for mr chris scragg and he races it occasionaly the nr 3 and 4 cars are the 77 cars , one of them is owned by the jaguar heritage trust and the nr 4 car was sold about 15 years ago to someone in australia who sold it a year ago to someone in the UK this car is being restored by jd classics in the UK at the moment the nr 2 car is a car build up out of bits that where bought when broadspeed closed shop and is still known as the bitsa car originality is debatable but still it has a lot of the original parts this car was sold not to long ago for about 80.000 gbp for the full story on the broadspeed racers www.xclusively-jaguar.co.uk/xj_newsletter_10-01-01.htmlregards mitch

I would like to comment on the subject Thanks for the comments; nice to be able to get a more definitive view. The problem with 'The Internet' is that information gets copied and re-copied until differing versions of the same history exist. some sources said 3, some 4, so kudos for putting the record straight. Can I ask if you know anything about the XJC in The New Avengers, granted it must have been a replica, but was there any connection to Broadspeed at all?

Interesting stuff. I've just read that Broadspeed driver Andy Rouse (massive best BTTC driver ever) has been in the pub talking to my friend Berni about racing.... with regard to doing some work on Berni's racing Fiesta Love those old Broadspeed cars, fingers crossed that Mr Rouse can bring some of his legendary skills to help out Team BB Coachworks!

hello all
on the avengers broadspeed
this car was build by broadspeed and did have a lot of the mods that the race cars had it was loaned to the filmstudio by british leyland ( at that time the owner of jaguar )
the car was for sale in the 80s after that it was never seen again it must be somewhere in a collection as it's no longer on the road
i spoke to someone who says he knew where it was and has seen it in person ( in a real bad state ) but if or if not this is true i don't know
andy rouse also build a replica for himself this car had a lot of modifications but sad to say also an automatic gearbox it has been in a museum in the uk for several year , after that it dissapeared
regards
