I had one of these, a 1973 model back in the mid 80s. They are cracking cars with chocolate gearboxes.... Id deffo have another tho, my one was light years ahead in terms of comfort, ergonomics etc than all the old chod that I had owned before like Vauxhalls, Fords and the like. A lot of car for little money.

I am a Saab enthusiast, and so as such I know a few who run these everyday. I even know a guy who has a superb 1980 99 Turbo which he uses to travel everyday between Bury St. Edmunds and Cambridge! Parts wise most are easily available - less so for the Turbos. I do know of a great one for sale currently www.uksaabs.co.uk/UKS/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=78657

Cool cheers, the 99 gets a thumbs up from the gf, which is always a bonus. I hear they have a few cooling issues (triumph related, no?) specifically with the top entry/exit of the rad hoses, is this a real problem (electric fan?) or just isolated? and anyone know what these alloys are?

Cool cheers, the 99 gets a thumbs up from the gf, which is always a bonus. I hear they have a few cooling issues (triumph related, no?) specifically with the top entry/exit of the rad hoses, is this a real problem (electric fan?) or just isolated? cooling - from my limited experience of owning a saab 99 turbo (its up for sale BTW), the radiators are ok coping with 150bhp/180lb torque worth of heat. upping the performance and you would probably get into difficulty. the size of the rad is IMO a bit on the small side but is adequate. i've just fitted a new genuine rad (£140) and stays bang on N all the time apart from going just above N in heavy traffic. NA's have a puller fan and the turbos have an electric pusher fan. I put a new fan seeing as the stand elec fan was 31 years old. Also, i've noticed that the rad outlet is at the top of the rad, when normally the outlet is low where cool water is. I reckon this is a scandinavian thing for cold winters etc. The engines must use genuine thermostats - aftermarket ones just aren't right. the stat is a 2 stage with the 2nd stage closing off flow to the heater so all coollant get pushed through the rad. B series engines comes from Ricardo design that Triumph also bought. Thing is Saab then spend a huge wedge developing the engines further, that why they tend to more reliable than their Triumph counterparts.
