apologies if this subject has been banded about as much as, errr...banded steels. looking' on goggle it seems every KW in car forum land says no, don't be ridiculous. however locust kit car, general kit car forums and the odd bod who sounds like s/he maybe a professor in thermal dynamics says why not?...give it a go.. and it seems don't just go for the biggest cc bike to get an end can from unless you have a big cc car.. so ive read about the gas flow and the back pressure and the restricts, doesnt restrict argument... i just want to replace the silencer on my runaround that is a bit of a banger cos it had hair comin' out of it today ;D..and i have some bike silencers doin' nuffin' in the garage... and it will be fairly hidden cos I'm a bit older than the barry bits brigade but wanna be different (ish) what d'ya reckon guys??/

My friend has a Kawaswki ZX-6R's silencer on her rat Beetle. And it is legal even on Finland's MOT, so why not. Sound's very good at least on Beetle So do it I say

I am running a suzuki hayabusa silencer on my buggy: Nice and quiet, no noticable loss in power from running an open pipe (if anything i can drive harder due to the lower noise levels). I used a pre-formed bend (from ebay), and a home made mounting flange to fit it.

i fitted a retro hot rod sidepipe costing now on fleabay £ 17 but its from late 70s early 80s not to loud although have fitted stainless heat shields which dampen sound and as there are very few about like none in my area its good value per pound spent gets lots of interest as most people havent seen a thrush side pipe in their lives

Friend of mine fitted a shortened bike can on a Mk1 MX5 this weekend, and deleted the rear silencer in the first place. To be honest it sounded quite good, and certainly not overly loud.

I am currently running a bike can on my skoda, as the only silencer and it sounds really good (IMO). Not too loud either. The one I am using is a baffled one rather than straight through.

What car is it for? The best way to look at it is power output, motorbikes although smaller engined are generally higher revving and higher power output / cc. A CBR600 can will be fine on anything up to about 130bhp

You got the car, you got the cans, whatve you got to lose?
My old Davrian originally had a pipe from something like a 400 super dream and sounded awesome.

I've run carbon cans on 3 of my cars and no problems at all ... apart from scrapping one when it got smashed in to the floor on the backed of my 67 beetle ( a bit low ) .. the sound was perfect

Once got followed by the Police for 10 miles due to my loud exhaust. Never once did they see me or me them ( until I pulled over ), was all done purely on direction of sound ! Mind you it was the only silencer on a stage 2 Sunbeam Alpine and it was from a Triumph 250.

Thing to remember about bike silencers is stock OE ones will be interference baffled and absortive as well, ie they'll have cross-over pipes separated by plating so will actually be really quite quiet but will be pretty rubbish for gasflow and loads of backpressure. Most aftermarket ones will be absorptive only, ie it'll be a straight-through tube like a colander lined with wadding and only cut out a small percentage of the noise, though will be excellent for gasflow. And loud! A lot of them come with an interference baffle that goes into the end that will cut down a lot of noise but at the cost of backpressure Couple of a mate's supercharged Rotary-engined Imp; Very neat, very hard to package anything much bigger into such a small space... VERY loud!
