One of the many "cars I should have bought" was a lime green Mazda 929 coupe. It was a 1982 or 1981 IIRC and it was up for sale at £995 in 1990 or so. It was in mint condition. I missed out on it (you snooze, you looze) and saw it a couple of times later around Nottingham, still looking awesome. Page with many pics on is here: lieuxdits.free.fr/mazda929.htmlPics are too big when linked... how whacky is that? Anyone seen one or more interestingly anyone know if that green beasty is still about (long shot 10 years after I last saw it)

Oh don't show me that! I've only just recovered from the 626 Coupe thread.
Mr Bo11ox will tell you that it gives you "fire under the skin" apparently.

I used to work on one when I was at the local Mazda dealer (ipswich) about 10 years ago... it was the same colour as that pic but it had a black stripe over the bonnet and roof. I hadn't seen it for years and then I spotted it last summer in the local morrisons car park no camera though

Interesting to hear there are one or two about. I think one came to JAE at Billing some years ago, doesn't sound like either of those - probably a Japanese import via a USAF serviceman as it had the Q...LEW plate they often seem to wear, IIRC.

These age of 929s are ACE! In Japan they came with the MA (carb) and then FE (carb and then injected) 4-pot lumps and also varying configurations of rotary. And also a diesel -- go figure. The gun was (obviously) the 12a Turbo with 165hp from the factory. Only the piston ones are 929s. Rotary ones are Cosmo or Luce depending on spec level but not on body type as you could get a Cosmo coupe, hardtop and sedan and a Luce sedan and hardtop (I think). The MA dates back to about 1965 and is a very old-school style of OHC 4. The FE is a much better/newer design engine though in the 929s it was never very special. The EFI one is obviously the choice. Random fact: Some Kia 4wds have the highly desirable DOHC version of the FE. Pic from the French website: These also came on 4-door sedan and 4-door hardtop versions. Sedan: Hardtop: (Brown!) The 4-door hartops are, IMO, the coolest with 4 frameless doors and all the fruit. I really, really, really want one. They're cheap as chips here, too. Well, the piston ones. Genuine rotary ones imported used from the land of J are on the order of $4000+ compared to around $2k for a 4-pot.

Awesome. A good mate of mine had a Luce sedan packing a 12A, with automatic. It was one of the slowest things evAr, but it did have the benefit of sofa-like interior, buttoned velour ft ultimate w!

Shouldnt have clicked on this, thats another one to add to favourite searches on ebay, along with Chrysler 180, so that`ll be two emails every day bringing up listings for 929 brochures and 180 rear wheel cylinders but no actual cars, ever, I suspect!
Never even knew these things existed.

Those 929 sedans do seem moderately common on the continent, or did when I visited a few years back. Seen them in France and Norway and got brochures on them from Holland and Germany (plus lovely lovely Japanese one). Recently bought a Dutch coupe brochure, so maybe you could find one over there Vicsmith? Having said that Dutch used car prices don’t seem particularly bargainous so perhaps better to import one from Japan? Just remembered I scanned these, taken from this thread: retrorides.proboards86.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1168559951&page=1

Now I`ve seen the coupe from the rear. Coupled with the fact that this car has quad pop-up headlights I am going to be in some kind of eternal torment until I find one.

Imagine how much worse it would have been if you'd seen one and not bought it.

The coupe in spottedlaurel's post is the series 1. Notice the "opera" window behind the door. I am 95% sure that it is not a fixed window!
The coupe in my post is a series 2 which did not have the opera window. Not all coupes of either series had the quad pop-ups, and some of the 4-door hardtops had them, too.

I thought an Opera window was fixed? Opening onoes are "vent windows" I think? Or is that just US terminology...

Just noticed the cut-out on the LH corner of the coupe’s bootlid, which I assume is the fuel filler. My 240K has a similar arrangement –it makes filling it up that bit more pleasant, far better than grovelling around halfway down the car’s flanks.
Damn you Saru, mentioning about differences between Series 1 and 2 models when I’m not at home. I love looking through brochures, etc and getting to the bottom of pointless stuff like that. Last night I spent an hour or so trying to work out the spec’s of and differences between Patrol 160 and Y60 pickups, which just to add an extra bit of confusion you got in Australia as Ford Maverick.

Alistairk, I bow to your greater knowledge. I've always known them as opera windows but vent windows makes sense.
The spiderman car in DarrenW's post is a 626 coupe, or MX-6 as they were badged in Oz. Most/all of the ones of that shape that we got were 4WS, too. And some were turbo'd with stacks of torque steer.
Oh, yeah, just to be clear: 929 -> RWD. 626 -> FWD.
