Uncle Carroll offered ECM and injector upgrades to boost the performance to 225BHP from the factory standard 175BHP. In 1986 this was one of the top 5 quickest production cars in the world. Limited to 500, each numbered by Shelby, each built in Whittier at Shelby's own factory. One year only. FWD. The full Hot Rod Magazine article is in the April 1986 issue, cover story, "Shelby GLHS Whips GT-350" in a road race test using professional drivers. The R-model Stang was: Out-accelerated, Out-handled, Out-braked. 5.0L RWD vs 2.2L FWD. The SAAC folks weren't thrilled with ol' Shel THAT day. But they got over it. ;D Some folks say Mustangs look better than 4-slot toasters. I don't know about that. You can't see that well under full boost out of the little rear-view mirror in the Omni, so I never get to see much of the Mustangs myself. Mr. Shelby still owns his s/n 001. He still says it's his favorite personal car for pure fun to drive (including Cobras and Daytonas). I still own my s/n 437 too. Yes, same shell, with some nerfing, as the Simca box.

The UK Dodge FWD scene seems to have its own website, www.front-runners.net, and it seems like pretty fresh information and chat.

Interesting car alright - in fact its the same shell as the Talbot Horizon, though the front innner structure is totally different - these have mc Pherson struts while the talbots have torsion bars and double wishbones. I learned this when investigatig how to upgrade the suspension of my Talbot Alpine. Love those wheels!

I learned this when investigatig how to upgrade the suspension of my Talbot Alpine. Love those wheels! And I'd had the reverse thought of getting two new rear side panels from a Sunbeam Talbot to convert my other GLH (a Turbo-1, non-Shelby, non-IC spec) to 2-door from 4-door. All of our Omni/Horizon models of the breadbox style here were 4-door. (And built at the Mopar plant in Illinois!) It added sunstantially to the aggro of the Muffstang SAAC-ers that when their GT350 succombed to a new Shelby, it was a 4-banger, FWD, and a 4-door!!!! It was really more than they could bear. And to have it occur on the cover of HRM, and at the hands of Jerry Titus' son (Rick), himself a respected Shelby racer and journo. Oooooof, hurt, hurt, hurt.... At one time SAAC registered Shelby Dodges, but it was drummed out of the club by whining from those who could not accept change from Sensei Shelby! (And being built by Shelby once again at the behest of Lee Iacocca, like back in the '60s...) ;D

Hang on you're thinking of the rwd sunbeam talbot, that is a completely different car to the Talbot Horizon from which this GLH is derived, nothing in common at all despite similar proportions etc.

Yeah, my mum had a bronze Chrysler Sunbeam (AFM441S I believe) when I was a little 'un, that was definately RWD. A year or two later they changed the badging to "Talbot Sunbeam" but the car remained the same. The Horizon was totally different, although since the USA usually gets different front lights due to regulations (see Scirocco, Golf/Rabbit etc) it's hard to tell from those photos. The rear of the UK Sunbeam had ridged lights, the Horizon had bigger flush units. The swage line and window shape on the Shelby is identical to the Horizon. Sunbeam: Horizon:

Here's the blab I got: The Horizon body and underpinnings came from Chrysler's assumption of Simca France's assets. These were FWD cars. The Sunny Talbot was the odd duck, revised from FWD into RWD for a special run of rally cars. I think the 2-door rear wings could be zipped onto the 4-door shell. The substructure still have enough common DNA. Well, maybe....

Youre mistaken i'm afraid - structurally and mechanically the sunbeam talbot is a shortened version of the early 70's (rwd) UK Rootes-family Avenger - even has the same doors, dashboard etc, but has nothing in common with the fwd horizon which its itself a development of the 100% french and fwd Simca 1100 family.

Hmmmm. In the UK at least, the Sunbeam model (originally branded Chrysler, then Talbot) was introduced in 1977. It was RWD, based on the Avenger and borrowed a lot from Rootes models. They had the semi-hot Ti model, and the hotter-hot Lotus model. It only lasted until 1981, and was replaced with the FED Samba.
The Horizon also appeared in 1977, FWD and based on a shortened Alpine platform. Had 1.1, 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6 engines. Mk2 appeared in 1981 with different lights. The car was bigger than a Sunbeam.
I think there's a lot of name-changing and borrowing goes off, so I'm not even sure what your "Talbot Sunny" is - can't find any reference to it on Google. Both the Horizon and Sunbeam were known by various Chrysler/Talbot/Simca names. I've been trying to nravel it all and I'm confused!

Well poo... I'm dashed. I had hoped my Chryco lads had steered me onto a viable "vapor mod" for an Omni/Horizon toaster to go 2-door using the Talbot Sunbeam rear half sheetmetal bits. I appreciate having my preconceptions smashed to pieces. Thank you!

If you get the lineage worked out, I'd like to see the full family tree. Thanks!
