Like the title says, has anyone dropped a modern, or modernish tdi into a retro car to use everyday? Diesel is the horrible reality of modern driving so it'd be cool to have something retro that went well and did 40-50mpg. I'm thinking Pug/Citroen 1.9td in a slammed Hunter/Sceptre, or maybe BMW 2.5td in a Opel Rekord or Mk2 Zephyr? Anyone?

i'm feeling this. i was thinking VW variant or some other classic estate like an escort or amazon. don't fancy putting a bike rack on the manta or using it for work every day. i got the idea after using my girlfriends 1.9 golf TDi for a weekend when i did about 600 miles on fresh air. i could live with performance aswell, not fast not slow, just right. i'd appreciate any info in this department. i want a new project for the new year.

I think Stanton's wee beastie is running modern Diesel power : Its a very popular conversion for Retro machinery on the continent.

Makes a lot of sense, imagine a Triumph 2000 estate with a BMW 2.5 TD engine in, that would be awesome transport man.

Now that is an interesting question. A mate of mine is running a TDI powered 1977 VW Camper, you´ll need one of the early Audi 80(Golf 3 lumps (not much electronics involved) and they go like sh*t. A company in Recklinghausen, Germany makes a living from converting the VW T3 to TDI´s, nearly went down that road when my Turbodiesel went on me a few years ago. Theres also a VW Splittie running a TDI over here, never seen it though unfortunately. www.vw-bus-tdi.de/And because we don´t like threads without pics.... Here´s a "how to do TDi in VW T3" thing ....in english www.haywood-sullivan.com/vanagon/TDI/index.htmlWill be interesting to see what else comes out of the woodwork.

I've seen a couple of A60's with Montego engines in as there's a combination of various BL parts that help it come together. There was a chap who lived not far from me who stuck one in an MGB too.

I've seen a number of camper vans with various modern engines in, normally VW's.
T25 with a golf GTi engine, others with TDi or just the TD model engines (apparently the ones with the i at the end were a slightly different design)...etc
Can definitely be done, with some work!

Sprinter tdi - yes! I drove a sprinter a month or so ago in the rain. It was a bit like a big RS2000 - lots of go and very tail-slidy!!

That Passat diesel in Amazon wagon, is that a modern fwd tdi turned round to drive the back wheels? I'd need to sign up to find out, which I can't be bothered to do. How did he mate the engine up with a gearbox, clutch etc?

I know they aren't always as stright forward as you'd hope. Know a guy put a Ford TDI (can't remembe which one now) in a Mk2 Consul and it was a right ballache to do for a rattly tractor like driving experiance...

Pug dT diesels, the old 1.8TD from Escorts and Mondeos, and older VW TDs are all fair game.... can be made to run with a little effort. The newer stuff like VW PD motors, Ford TDCIs and stuff are a lot more complex and you'll need all the sensors to make it go.
Not sure if a Megasquirt-style system can be put in place to get rid of the OEM ECU though?

Not sure if a Megasquirt-style system can be put in place to get rid of the OEM ECU though? don't see why not, thet are electric injectors not mechanical and megasquirt claim on their site it can be used on any injected engine even rotary, diesel or gas.... I put a sierra 1.8TD into a capri, was as easy as. The pinto engine mounts fit the TD block if you swap them left for right, exhaust is same side as pinto so cut and shut downpipe, the gearbox bolts to the capri crossmember and the prop fits. (diesel t9 box, car had a petrol t9) After that, its just rad hoses, electric fan kit (car already had one) ign live to the stop switch and lengthen the temp sender wire. even used the same send/return lines from the fuel tank. You don't half get some funny looks though, although mostly the smoke and noise just means everyone thinks your pinto is on its last legs lol...
