Some of you may know, but I am in the market for a Car for Nicola, Ford 100E, or Ford 100E, or Ford 100E, or Ford 100E, these were the options she has given me.
It may well be a weldathon project, but more likely to be a sensible one with not too much to do.
I am also off on Sunday to buy a VAT-Free Clarke 160TM mig welder, which will be run off refillable bottles.
Now BOC gasses do 3 sizes, X, Y, Z and each progressive size is £10 more, I will go for the short medium sized "Y2 bottle.
Cost to take it home are as follows: Gas charge = £40.08 Bottle hire/year = £63.88 and a COLLECTION CHARGE !! = £13.05. Totalling up at £117.01 to start welding.
Are there cheaper ways to get Argoshield Universal gas in a medium sized bottle in the Medway/kent area ?

your local friendly pub landlord. Get at bottle from him. He should be able to get it filled cheap too. That what i'm about to pickup from a friend who does this.

Had the same problem myself. I already had a large pub gas bottle so I got a local hydraulic firm to make me up a short length of hose with a pub fitting at one end and a standard bottle fixing at the other. Now when I need a refill I just go to one of my customers (engineering company, sheet metal worker etc) and connect a full bottle to my empty, open the taps SLOWLY, and we both end up with a half bottle. Price for this varies from twenty quid to nowt depending on where I go and who sees whats happening, ahem. Phil.

Try Adams Gas www.adamsgas.co.uk/Default.aspxWill cost about the same to start (circa £100) inc. delivery of gas but there is no yearly fee/subscription like BOC etc. Have just emailled them myself. If you go the Pub gas route make sure you find pure Co2 most have Co2 with Nitrogen which apparently is no good. I'm no expert but trying to find the same! lol. I'm hoping to find a super cheap option.. like a free bottle and somewhere to fill it!

Hey guys Grizz has just reminded me of something, I used to Manage/run recycling centres (Tips to most of us!) Most don't accept compressed gas bottles as they tend to go bang when you compress them (Oh yes I know!) So have to drag them out of the various skips they get slipped in to, anyway most have to pay to have them removed so go have a word when its quiet to see if they have any stashed away. Be prepared to part with a few quid despite the fact your doing them a favor in many cases! lol Oh and don't ask the boss, or anyone who has appeared in council/company vehicles as they are usually inspecting etc. and you'll get the official answer!

Bottle to bottle transfers have the potential to go horrifically, explosively wrong. Its not quite so bad with pure CO2, as the bottles are "only" pressurised to 50 bar or so. Make sure your fittings are up to the pressure, do it very slowly and watch for heat buildup. Argon bottles are pressurised to 250 bar iirc - one tiny leak could mean Game Over.

I opened a BOC account at my local depot. You can ask to pay the bottle rental monthly, which is what I do. As you say, a refill or a fresh bottle is about £40ish. If you open an account, as you must to take a bottle away, it gets added to your first bill. I paid for mine about five weeks after I took the bottle away! BOC have been excellent, I must say. I pay £5.75 a month for rental, which is not too bad, IMHO. That is for a small bottle (size X, IIRC). I might get a larger one next time. I shall need it for the Stag project... EDIT - The collection fee is, I think, only if you have the BOC truck come round to get the bottle off you at your premises. I don't recall paying it to get mine in person from the depot. "I'm"

I use disposable bottles. About 3 CO2 will do a very very rotten old shed that needs everything doing, then the welder goes back on the shelf for a few years and I don't have to worry about bottle rent. You definitely don't want to have to rent the bottle out, end of. I find CO2 welds old car metal better than Argoshield, it's a bit more forgiving if there's a bit of muck left behind. Might just be me or my welder, or my very rusty old curse word projects. I've got a dead CO2 bottle here ready to fill, but I'm cutting the top off it to turn it into an air mortar

another cheaper option than disposable bottles is the small refillable one from seally. I think its 1kg? Buy the bottle -cant remember how much. About 11squid exchange. I used about 4 of them on rx3. Last one is still going. On cheap welders always turn off gas at bottle asap- most triggers leak a little- any leaks is money into the clouds. I'm not sure on how good pub co2 will be- will find out and report back.

Think the main issue with pub gas is it comes in two types.. Co2 and nitrogen mix and pure co2. The nitrogen mix is more common iirc. and not so hot for welding or so I'm led to believe. Not that i've tried either!

Whilst trying to think of further 'free' ways to get gas.. I had a thought.. could you use dry ice (frozen co2) in some way...

seeing as this has been bumped up again, I've just bought an empty pub bottle off ebay for a quid, akku's picked it up for me, and I intend to get our local fire extinguisher firm to fill it with 'co2 for welding mate' for a tenner a bottle - WIN!

I hope the date stamp showing the last cyl test date is OK - I bought a pub gas bottle off ebay and got my local Fire extinguisher place to refill it - big shock - last tested 10 years ago - so it needed to have a retest and new valve £60 was the charge..... Then I had to pay to fill it. Places may fill them without checking the date stamp but I'd rather have peace of mind...... Co2 gets a lot of bad press from the welding experts but it's preferable to rental charges from BOC etc
