Not really a car thats been the subject of modifying much, especially retro modded, but should be a good candidate. Lowered on some nice rims should work very well. The shape with clear fold down the side would lend itself to two tone as well. best my drinking fuel google-fu can find you is this Racer rather than retro Bet a set of BBS gold centre cross spokes would look good on a silver or dark coloured (green/blue/black) one, the German look if you like Infact here is German tuners Arden's take on the S-Type. Dark colour good, body kit not so sure - one of those cars that has a lot of potential but needs someone with version to bring it out VIP Inspiration? You know I think the 2 tone idea might be a missed trick on these

Damn, I thought it was going to be a thread on the 60's S-Type then. Buggeration. Still, I reckon they have potential to Hi-tech it out to the gills and make a big scary monster with lots of Carbon, brushed stainless and billet alloy.

Sounds just right for a daily. I do quite like the new S Type (instead of the old 60's one). What are the turbo diesels like? Would it be the right balance of performance and economy, with the right look/spec?

S-Type Jags are actually retro, as in there a modern car clearly stylicstically influenced by a car of the past.

Oh indeed, much inspired by the original S-Type Very like my mothers old wedding hire car, but hers had body coloured wheels, chrome rings and hubcaps with spinners.

They do look like a lot of car for the money. I've always wanted a Jag and an Xj6 won't fit on the drive. If I can convince my wife of the wisdom of having a 125cc bike for work and an S-type for weekends I could be onto a winner. The only modded one I have is a practice photoshop I did.

My dad has a 05 3.0V6 and it's a great car - I'd definitely recommend one. Unfortunately for him, but great for you - they depreciate like an executive Hyundai

I looked at buying one of these and in the end bought a lexus.
Early (ie the cheap) ones suffer a whole load of problems like the AC blows hot all the time, some computer issues, the V8s (the ones I was looking at) have a nikosil bore issue and all early models with automatic box can suffer from a sudden and no-warning failure of the trans - its sealed for life - "Not user servicable" (although some people have a work around for this) and the fix is a whole new trans when it expires.
Theres a whole list of faults with them, do some research. The diesel ones have some spectacular engine failure problems too. The owners forum is quite a depressing read LOL!
The later ones are fine... all the early problems are fixed. I decided I will look again when I can afford a much newer one as all the ones I could afford were way too risky and most had faults when you looked at them.
They also are too easy to confuse with a Rover 75 or sundry Hyundais etc.
You can get a Lexus GS300 for the same money or much less and its a far nicer car.
I bought the Mk4 LS400 in the end and it rooolz
Lexus FTW.

Got to agree with AKKU on this. Lexus for the win. I currently have an IS200 which is a bit underpowered and slow and plasticky inside but smooth and quiet and revvy when you want it to be. My old Celsior (LS400) was smooth and great, but thirsty and soggy as it was a bit abused before I got it, but it never let me down and I put 16k miles on it in under a year and I'm ashamed to say that I forgot to change the oil once in that entire time.

be really careful buying a diesel Jag. There are problems with various of the diesel engines they used and noneof it is pretty reading. IMO a petrol Jag on LPG is a far better option. Check out the owners forums and see which diesel models have what faults and how you can spot them/avoid them.

I think these became un-popular because Jemeremy Clarkson said they were rubbish and they looked funny, cue 1,000's of reps changing their cars. He claimed they were 'just Ford Mondeo's' as well, which is like claiming 'they're just Ford Model T's' or they're 'just the car out of the Flintstones'. I was going to buy one a couple of years ago, I think they're really nice looking cars, but no idea how they drive.

There is no Mondeo part on an S type. It is actually derived (in part) from one of the Lincoln models, possibly the LSC MkIX. The X type is the car which uses some Mondeo DNA. Clarkson talks utter rubbish. I did see quite a positive review of the S Type R on TG years ago, of course the compared it to cars half its price and said they were not as good. Typical relevant reviewing there... Meh...
I have driven the S type and its nice. Well, the V8 versions are anyway, never tried the V6 or deisel. Decent power, decent ride, decent handling. I was very close to buying one but the prefacelift ones are just too fragile/tempremental.
