Hi, Thought it seemed appropriate to launch a new project upon the forum, perhaps peer pressure will motivate to keep progressing the job instead of the usual start and leave half done. So what we have here is a 1986 Woodall Nicholson Norwood Mk6 Hearse. Its Mark 2 Granada based with the 2.8 V6 lump up front backed up with the slushbox(damn just sold the MT75 manual boxes!), and predictably its black. As for plans well first up its getting pressed into service a Lands End to John O'Groats(via Ireland touring holiday), but there's already some 17" five spokes ready to bolt on. Also its getting alarmed/immobilised next week(sadly can't be too careful). In the pipeline will hopefully be air bags, big brake conversion and a rear disc conversion and in time a spruce up of the paintwork and some ghost flames up front - what the view on those - cool or cheese. Watch this space - the alloys go on tomorrow all being well

Got the 17" 5 spokes on today, definite improvement on the 14" van tyres it came with ;D Its a simple but effective first modification, I think they really suit the Mk 2 shape. Its MoT time on Monday, before heading off for a 2000 mile tour at the end of the week so if any knows where there is a pair of grey or black front seats from a Mk2 ghia etc then drop me a line, the current seats are rubbish(folding without headrests). Only downside is the new rims make me want the airbags NOW! Patience is a virtue, best get the mazdas sold then! Dave

Good stuff, i always wanted a hearse! Nearly bought one when i was in the band ( no, not The Band) for carrying the gear around and i so wanted to buy one out of a scrapper - a 1956 Dodge Royale Custom complete with factory right-hand drive and V8!!Still one of my biggest regrets Where in Ireland are you taking this deathbus to?Hope you get your MOT bud

MoT cleared, immobiliser in and we headed firstly for the west country. Cracked thermostat housing revealed itself on the way down so losing water rapidly and had to stop every hour and top up. An impromptu meeting with a banger driver in a service stop lead to a sourcing a new housing from a local racer who had a spare. New item acquired and fitted yesterday ready for big slog to Fishguard, and then onto Dublin!
Now in Dublin, having cleared 1000miles since 2.00 pm on Saturday. The old hearse is going well so fingers crossed it will continue this week and then over the weekend we head for Scotland and John O'Groats. So if anyone spots us give us a wave on the way(or if spotted with bonnet up give us a hand!)
Cheers and we'll update again another day on the way!

Well I'm in a bit of a quandry, during the tour of Ireland the old stiff shifter developed a running problem, and to finish off with the gearbox went pop driving into Dublin. Thankfully a combination of the Footman James free european recovery and the AA got the beast back home, and our holiday to continue with a variety of hire cars(Nissan Note and a Punto - Nissan was surprising nice to drive - oh the shame!)
However this leaves me with a problem of an unroadworthy hearse in need of some mechanicall love, but what to do is the question, shall I:-
a. Fit a recon box and torque convertor - ÂŁ400 through a contact b. Cosworth 24v and 4spd auto - might take a little while c. Small Black and C4 combo - can I find a good one cheap
The running I think I've traced to a vacuum problem(it was stalling in drive at low speed/idle - revs didn't increase when put into gear), but a new engine is tempting. Oh decisions, decisions. So what is the view from the gallery!
Get this choice out the way then its in with the retrim(I'm looking for a pair of Mk3 black leather seats and centre console with radion aperture from a Mk 2 if anyones got anything - please!). And then following up with big brake conversion - looking at the H-Spec stuff - would look good behind the rims I reckon, and some air suspension eventually.
Cheers

After much consideration I'm going to keep the transmission stock for the time being(on account of not having a job right now ). I've replaced the vacuum modulator on the gearbox in a bid to stop the stalling issue, that didn't work so next step is to change the vacuum piping which is next weeks job together with a new propshaft doughnut that I noticed was cream crackered last week whilst changing the modulator. Also spotted some welding that needs doing on a chassis rail so whilst its off the road I'll get that cut out and plated up. If the new piping doesn't solve the stalling issue(it runs fine until put in gear and held on the brakes, then revs drop and it stall. I've checked the obvious, timing and testing the distributor vac advance manually and it seemed to work so I'm a bit stumped once the pipes are changed - anyone got any suggestions? Cheers

Yes, put a 24v in it, for the reliability if nothing else, that's why the hearse is currently in the garage with no heart (updates soon folks ) Get it bagged, you know you want to! ;D

We've got a few V6 auto boxes lying about that are not required if you want a quick cheap fix mate.
I've got a "known good" one still in a sweet 2.8 estate that recently came off the road... I've driven it and it shifts smoothly & kicks down properly.
Could be yours for a drink - J14 M1, drop me a PM if interested.

Been a while since I made any progress on the hearse, so with a spare gearbox ready to go I thought I'd have a pre MoT poke about whilst it was up on the axle stands......either a wise move or a big mistake as I found more of the dreaded rot. Knew I'd have this to sort out and was planning to clean and plate whilst the box was out But whilst prodding near the front footwell I made a hole so thought best get the wing off and weld it up...and started to make bigger holes elsewhere Consolation is that it's not been touched with the torch before so haven't got a load of work chopping out the bodges of others. More work than I envisaged/hoped(isn't it always the way) and the deadline is Retro Rides Gathering on the 17. Mojo is majorly dented right now, as this is the third project needing major welding work I've got on my hands now(if only for some nice easy mechanical work!! )Still at least it's not raining....
