Hi.......... Some of you might remember I was asking for advice on lowering my H120 fastback........Well, it was a bit of a homebrew, but heres the technical stuff and some pictures.....perhaps you could let me know what you think? Its 2" lower all round, first I stripped the front struts off the car and took the opertunity to fit new strut inserts....(heavy duty) With the coils springs off the car I got the mini angle grinder on the job and carefully removed 1 full coil + the dead coil at the base of the spring......(roughly 2 inches) I finished the end to a tidy flat and then ground the new base of the coil to help it sit flat on the spring seat. The top spring seat was modified to hold the shorter coil spring in place.....see pictures..... New lower ball joints were fitted while the whole assembly was off the car and a coat of paint to brighten things up a bit....also new rubber gaiters fitted to protect the new strut push rods. When the struts were refitted I checked all was well and seated properly and made some measurements.......(the front was now down by 2 inches as planned! Next to the back.......This was easy.....2 inch ford lowering blocks and new longer U bolts..... some trimming inside the rear arches and job done........H120 now sits lower by 2 inches alround! Its made a huge difference to the ride.....not too firm, but feels taut and looks a little leaner and a bit meaner..... I don't think I could have gone any lower as my 4 branch exhaust comes down below the floorpan a little and ive got a little bit of daylight underneath, but not much! Good news is, if I want to go back to std, ive got another set of coils (uncut) and another set of upper spring seats without the mods..... It would be great to hear what you think.....Positive or Negative? Cheers for all your help! Ps. if anyone wants to do the same with a Hunter or any other Arrows series saloon or estate......should be just the same underneath......Go on! you know you want to!.....Hmmmm what would a Hillman Hunter GLS or GT look like with a drop? If anyone want more info or pics let me know.

Stunning. Only thing i'd do is have the rear wheels banded out to 7" wide (without adding any extra dish).

Thanks Matt, if i get the rears banded out to 7" with no extra dish, would that add the extra width on the inside? I think there is clearance.......The back axle has alloy spacers fitted, if i removed those i could go to 7" and go for 1" extra dish on the original rims (have i got that right?) the spacers are just over 1" Cheers.

Yep that would add all the extra width on the inside of the wheel. You could do what you say if you removed the spacers would look perfect I would imagine. Matt

Coil choppage is on the cards for Madge, but her rear springs are so knackered they don't need lowering!

they did some vaery stylish cars that are forgotten as they were the cars disappearing off the roads when I was just starting to drive.. The Spec level was high as well for the time.. example Sceptre overdrive on top two gears as standard Rear heating in the cabin Adjustable steering column front and rear quarterlight windows full complement of dash gauges that was on a 66 car!
even the base level hillman minx's were well equipped with heaters and comfortable interiors all featured the unmistakable styling of the rootes group which is probably a love or hate thing to be honest
I think the car in this thread is one of the best examples of late rapier I have seen.. but if you think these look cool do a goole and check out the series 5 rapier .. now that is a work of art..
