UPDATE page 2

(this is copied from other forum sites)

G'day every one. i'm new here and I thought i'd share my new project car. I picked it up from my uncle as he had run out of time to keep working on it. He started with a white, and total rust heap. Pretty much no floor etc... So it got build out of spares from the rally cars.

It is a 1969 BMW 1602 but it has a 1974 BMW 2002 motor with a 4 speed on the back.

Heres a short list of what is wrong:
Speedo is wrong (wrong gear that drives it)
Over fueling the carbi
Dash falling apart
Rusting boot lid
The hood is far from straight but has had some work done
Drivers door a little rusty where it has hit the hood.
It's now decided that it will over heat all the time, so I looks like it might have done a head gasket. Other then that the motor is totally rebuilt.

I think I have my work cut out for my. Any way heres some pics of it.
The other car is one of the rally cars.

A little more arty.
My uncle put the 2002 badge on before he gave it to me, but I think i'll put the 1602 ones back on.
The interior isn't all that bad, just a little hard on the back side on long drives.

Then the head blew!
Well after sending the head out to be fixed up, I have found out that it is pretty stuffed. The vale guides are worn out, the cam is stuffed from not being put in right last time around, the timing would have been out to. The water has also broken through the gasket and corroded out the bottom of the head. There was water in the motor for so long the timing cain was rusty! 2 of the 4 spark pug holes had been rounded out too. It's about $500 to do a cheap job of it.
(after it was cleaned up a bit.)

So with the car not running I did some work to the brakes.

I picked up these drums a few months back but I didn't have time to get them on. It took a day to do but some complications mean I can't put the car back on the ground yet.

Any heres the story...
Puller on the back left
[image]
The plate after about an hour of tying to get the damn thing off. it moved about 2mm!
After about 3 hours of hell. Out came the angle grinder. I went with dads way of cutting it and took a peace out of the spindle. so that was now going to need to be placed, jolly pain in the backside. I got a second had one and had it in the next day.
After I cut it off.
I got the right hand side off in 5 mins with out any problems. I think all of that side had been off.
Heres the 320i drums next to the old 2002 ones.
Both drums are now on, BUT the hand brake cable is to short! some foll shortened the ends of the cables when the car was rebuilt in tazzy before I had it. so now I need new cables. To make matters worse the hand brake handle point is braking off the car. it looks to have been fixed before but it's all coming off now. So I have to make a new one up out of much thicker metal.

Heres what the interior looks like now. New wheel (from the late 70's) center console removed, and hazard light switch now where the cigarette lighter was.

The new muscle car-ish flat back back. I also attacked the rims, I do have mags for it but I think they look like crap so they're not going on any time soon.

That was all about 6 months ago. I get the head back tomorrow, the brakes are done and a few other things. I'll keep with the updates a I do things.

Heres some more things i've done to her now.

The first was putting the seats from my e21 in it. There was no need for the e21's seats anymore, it will have race ones when it's done. No real dramas putting them in, I did however have to change the tracks. The e21 and 02 have different seat adjustment on them. The e21s is on a different angle so the 02's handle didn't stop it from moving back or forward. That was easy, but I did get my self on a sharp edge.
Shitty photo I know, but I couldn't be stuffed taking the car cover off to get it form the other side where I can get the door all the way open.

Any one have some tan/light brown 2002 door trims they want to sell? or a tan/light brown rear seat back. The top is black (sprayed) and the bottom is tan/light brown

Keeping with the interior work I put a stereo in. The head uni was a new one I got for $145 at JB HI-FI. I got it because it's MP3 like the one in my galant, and I couldn't go back to just normal cds. The electrics in this car are all over the place and not much is where it should be. I used the power supplie that my cuz used when he had it, but I have to put a new line in for when the car is running. No big deal but I now have to turn the player off when I get out as it doesn't go off with the ignition. I used the speakers that where stock in the galant, and I remember why I took them out now! The back ones were easy, I just have to make the holes in the back a little bigger to fit the 6" speaker from what looked like a 5" before.

It's a much neater hole when the one before, even if the ends are bent over like that.

The front was a little different, as I can't cut into the body (one of the things my uncle told me I can't do) so I couldn't put the fronts where most 02 owners put them in the doors or just in front of them in the kick panel. I had to make them fit into the center console. Not the best for sound design but it works.

I couldn't help but put staples there I couldn't get the gun in behind to put them in.

I had to make the cover for the hole. It has a shelf that the head unit sits on. This is cover with vinyl and some foam. The speaker grill is one from the speakers I put in the galant, I didn't need them as the stoke ones fitted over the new speakers. The speakers them selves are mounted on bits of roof tin! lol a bit 'different' but it work. The ash try has been given the boot, I smoke so I don't need one. The hazard light switch is new where the cigar lighter was. It just needed to be drilled out a little and it fitted.

Now to the most difficult thing I had to make. With the boot lock not working I thought I might make a cable release for it. Sounded easy but it took about 3 days to make! The handle is from a galant (i like to work with what I know works) I picked that up from the wreckers when I was getting bits for the galant. I when and bought 5 meters of cable and some sheath to cover it. The cable was $8 and the sheath was $35!! Any way I also had to put a longer leaver on the lock. Dad took care of that and make it look almost stock, even used bolts from a bent 2002 boot lid I have! lol

Heres the stet up at the drivers end. I think it looks almost stock, I should link something up to the fuel tank one, hmmm and ejector seat!

Heres what it looks like at the boot end. The coper pipe was an off cut that was shaped over a big bit of steal pipe. It is adjustable so if the cable stretches or should I say when it does I can make it tighter.

From the out side I don't think you'd know that it was a bolt and washer until you get up close.

The hand brake still is not working but I have to make some new mounts for it. the OG ones are totally fooked.

I now have to get a locking fuel cap. Who knows what one is worth or should I get one for a bike and make that fit. I thinking I might go the bike one if I can't get a BMW one for cheap.

I picked up some heat proof paint and gave the rocker cover and intake a coat of it.
This took soooooo long to clean, so many small bits to get into. Just what you need an old tooth brush for.

I got the head back! it will be on on saturday, fingers crossed...

Preview of what it will all look like
[image]

Had some paint left so I did the rad too.

After I putted out the gear box and had the clutch checked it turned out that it had an air bubble in the cylinder at operates the clutch. oh well it runs again thats all that matters. When I took it out for a test drive with every thing fixed the speedo cable snapped! not that the speedo was any where near being right anyway. when I was following a car at 60km/h it said I was doing between 120 and 130 mp/h (miles per hour speedo) and when I was stopped it was doing 45mp/h or 10mp/h.

I'm still waiting on new tires for it, so I can put my wider mags on. Heres a shot fo the mags with the big tires on. it's running 195/60 at the front and 205/60 at the back. I can't turn the front wheels all the way so i'm going down to a 185/50.
heres one with the center cap on. the mags are on my green car at the mo.

New tail light.

i'd be out side working on lucky but it starts to rain every time I go out side, so all it can do it look out the window.

I took it to uni today and blew the electrics and had to dump start it to get it home. I've got hand brake cables on order and i'ce started collecting bits for a big brake front end.

cheers

hey paul. I called it lucky '69 the day I got it, and it's had nothing but problems! It's slowly turning around and things are all working. Now something brakes every second time I drive it!

She will be lowered about an inch I think will work. It's have some stiff as springs to so I don't rub on the tires.

Heres a quick photoshop of it. not mu to my normal photoshop skill but it took 10mins.

I'll be running 185/50s to get it down a bit lower and have some stretch on it. Should look mean.

cheers

EDIT: I picked up some e21 320i hubs and discs so all I need now are some volvo calipars and I can put the "big brake" set up on. Then I will put the e21's race motor I have in the shed :D

Well I now I have some time and money to work on the old girl.

It was a sunny day so I set about switching the motor out of the e21 parts car.
First pull the motor from the 1602.
Easy.
The mess I have to clean up
[image]
Now time for the e21. Took a bit of work and jumping on the nose to pull the bolts out of the rails.
It was all good till I found that I have to change the sump. jolly pain in the backside oh well, just add it to the list of things to change to make it fit.

Put the 1602 away till next weekend.
Both motors will have to sit out here for the week.

Heres a 'chop' of what the end product might look like.

cheers more updates soon.

This weekends progress was getting the sumps and oil pumps changed. Got the motor dropped back in and test fitted the webers. It's going to be tight with the cold air intake but i'll make it fit.

I need to do a little rust repair under the drivers seat but that will not take to long. Then I can start on the fun stuff.

cheers

Build that and I'll do a feature on it for a magazine... :o That rocks a fat one. Just god rid of a 1602 from my garage after it had been sat for two years, turbo arches and all... I should have bought it from my buddy and done something with it, but hey ho. Great cars.

P.S. My sister lives in Margate

AT long last I have some time to work on that old girl.

First job to finish was the sound deadening. Worst job I've done on any car, it's just not fun at all. When I got ti finished I was so happy tho!
You can spot the places where the car has been welded up before next to the tunnel.

Next up was fit the bar for the harnesses. It took half I day but i'm happy with it. I had to put the bar in as the best spot for the back bold was right in the middle of where the speakers were.
Here it is under the new sheet. All this will have to come out again and be cleaned up and painted before it's done.

Now to being able to see at night. Some Mk1 Golf lights lights. I saw this idea in bodieanddoyle thread. I'm doing it a bit different by using the original 02 globe holders and cutting them down.

Here is the 02 bit marked out ready to cut. I'm going to attach the adjustment bits to each of the original mounts (thats for tomorrow)
Here is the golf light.
Here is the ring that hold the reflector on the golf. i've cut the adjustment bits off to fit behind the grill.

Some more of my old e21 going into the 02 now. I'm going to cut down the hand brake mount to fit the 02. It's much better then the 02 original one, more strength with the join on the back of it.

Welding will start next week. I'll have the accelerator pedal mounted, hand brake in, lights done, holes in the floor filled, battery box in the boot done, and the bumper irons fixed.

Cheers
