Copy from other forum sites i've posted on.
I thought it was about time I started a thread for my new car. I picked it up for $800 out of QLD. $720 later it was on a train to Melbourne. I was only intending to use the head on the 1602 but then I found more and more out about it. I'm not to sure on the exact numbers, but it has hight compression pistons and an aggressive cam. There are some very rusty custom made headers and pipe out the back. The 4 speed on the back seams to be in order but I wont know till I get it moving under it's own power. Yes I know I bought a car without driving, hearing it run much less even seeing it in the metal till it showed up on my door!
I'm told the car had run targa tas in a few years before 2000. I don't have the spectator books from back then so I don't know what year it was.
The plans for the car are to take it from it's HoodRide look now and take it back to what it was when it was built the first time around and that is a tarmac rally car.

This is when I started to pull the parts for the injection off to put the twin 45 webbers I picked up. I have 2 45 webbers, manifolds, custom air box and genuine webber linkages.

Pulled the sway bar off, to find that it was T.F. so looks like a new one is the only way to fix it. Now thats not the bad point, have a look at the mounting points. Right side. (nothing wrong)

I found a nice crack in the front on the ride side where the rad would sit.

Heres how the left side tie rod was held on.

On the good side, I found a fire extinguisher under one of the seats, and a trip meter in the boot. It had been cut off the car for some reason.
I got side tracked when mounting an oil gauge, and I still haven't mounted it.
Surface rust every where on the drivers side.

Speaking of running I found out why I got the car sooooooo cheap for what it was. It was a rally car but the last own (who bought it from the guy who made it a rally car) did some work to it but then could never get it working again. Well I found out why. The fuel lines had been used as a jacking point and crushed on the left side. oops. Then I found that the fuel line from the tank was totally squashed between the tank and body! big oops.

So after all this I thought I'd run the motor. I had to work out the electrics, they had been mostly pulled off. Got it turning over, that I am very happy about. next w/e I'll get some fuel going to it and make it run.

It was on the back of the cap so who know how that happened, wasn't me.
Under the car now. I got the pipes on with some help. Guess what, it rubs on the fuel tank and the drive shaft!

I've stripped out some of the sound deadening from the back. Just that one panel of it was 3.25kgs! My aim to to make it a very light car at the end of it all.

IT RUNS!! After any 4 letter words, replacing bits of pipe I got it going! The fuel tank is a jam jar so the car will only ruin for about a minute before it ran out of fuel. Check out the video I took. I love the sound, I can't wait to fire it up when the kids in the school next door are out for lunch time play! lol

After all this i've had no time to work on it so when I got some time I started stripping it again. I've got the bumper off, the lights out, head linner is going soon then the windows and dash.

Late seventies/early eighties shark nosed BMWs look superb (not that I'm biased at all!). You have got your work cut out getting this one up to scratch but it will be worth it in the end.

don't worry samage all thr paint will eb gone soon. it's going to have a full respray top to bottom. When it's done there will not be stencil in sight! I should get a photoshop chop of what it will look like when it's done up soon. cheers

Tell me about it. it would run but not get with it. there was so much fuel going into the motor that it was running out the holes in the pipes when I turned it off. I put a pressure gauge on it, put it down to 3psi and blew the lines out into my face! that was fun. The pump will be going now, I need to get my hands on a high flow low pressure one i'm told.
I love the note on it. not bad for a 4 banger I think. I'll have to go down a bit with the pipe size, it's hitting on so much stuff. I have no idea how the guy before didn't hear it rubbing on the tail shaft. It's to loud for road use so i'll need a bigger muffler too.
I wasn't an e21 fan much till I got this one. I think this one will ook much better then my 02 when it's done. I want to have it running and fully road reged by this time next year. If not before.
I'll have some time on the weekend to strip some more bit out, i'll post some pics of the progress.
