Thought it was about time that my Eunos got a proper thread As the head gasket went on my previous sensible winter hack (94 passat), I did the sensible thing of buying an MX5 And all looked good when I went and brought it, 11 months MOT, arches and sills spotless, good tyres and ran well (plus it had just had the cambelt changed) and was being sold by a chap that dealt in them. Admitidly the hood had 2 taped repairs (but was water tight), the rear shocks where pretty shot and the front wing/bumper where a bit battered. But for £700, couldn't grumble. Headed home and after driving for an hour the 1st problem came to light. The heater went cold but the temp gauge stayed in the middle and it drove fine so carried on home. Next day checked, water still there, no mayo so happy it wasn't another head gasket. Eventually turned out to be as simple as the thermostat had failed open. Then the alternator went, had a bypass hose go so I replaced all of the rad hoses, the stat and the rad. and then to top it off, the waterpump started to make a racket So I headed up to TR Lane in stroud for them to replace it and give it the once over (as they specalise in MX's). Turned out that the waterpump pulley was lose on 2 or the 3 bolts and it had fractured around the 3rd bolt. Thankfully he had a breaker in and supplied and fitted that instead of a water pump (and saving me £70 ;D). Whilst he had it up on the ramps, had the chance to give the underside the once over and it is in really good shape. So, with the knowledge that the mechanicals should now be sorted (that's got to jinx it ) and that the underside is good, I finally took the plunge and ordered some new suspension. And got a proper bargain. 4 brand new coilies, delivered from Belgium for £120 So will hopefully have these on soon, but also hoping to get the stock steels banded out to 8's (or perhaps 9's for the back ;D) and a rortier exhaust would be nice Also thinking a new hood would be a good plan, at the mo I am liking the idea of a dark red hood (like Audi fit) and a better front wing and bumper wouldn't go amiss either

Sweet, low on the banded steels with the battle scars that will look hard as nails! Got a soft spot for the MK1 MX5 both my brother and My Missus have em, though theirs are all spangled up with shiney bits, not my cup of tea but they still drive the same!

A few teething prob's are to be expected I guess, but has been a bit more expensive than 1st planned But it is getting there now and I have been enjoying the sunshine in it ;D Must admit that I don't like over shiney ones, but I would like to tidy up the exterior a bit. The bumper espec as it is pretty wavey under the plate so I can't run a sticky numberplate. Also want to lose the rear fog (put it in the drivers reverse light) and poss the mud flaps. Also thinking that a centre exit exhaust would be good, might have to investigate with the chap on here that builds the stainless systems at a very reasonable price Am I right in thinking that a 91 car does not need a Cat for the MOT? Ahh, another Nutz'r Must admit, can't believe how quick they arrived or how cheap they where selling at. Can't wait to get them on, going to be talking to Tim (Bratman) about fitting them soon ;D And a PM to JamesP has been drafetd, just need to finish off a SPI cooper and get that sold so I have some funds in the bank to get them done

Hi Si, was good to meet up round at Tims new place of employment and see yoru beasty in all its green goodness ;D The rims will be done, but need to get the funds together first (and a slave set of rims to run around on whilst they are away being adjusted )

Well, spoke to Tim (bratman) and was all lined up for fitting the coilies in a few weeks time, then got a call from Mel (on MX5 Nutz) "so, when are we fitting your coilies?, How's Sat morning sound" Being like a kid with a new toy, it was an offer I couldn't refuse (Sorry Tim, but thanks for your kind offer ). So this morning I headed down to Bournemouth with a boot full of tools and parts. Went pretty smoothly (its the 4th set Mel has done so was much easier than trying to work it out as you go), had to 'adjust' the sleeves in the shock lower mounts to get them to fit better, and the locking nut of the rear shocks is just touching on the driveshaft, but it is a soft alloy so will self notch over the next few miles but after 4 hours, it was back on the deck ;D It then took a 14 point manouver to get it off of Mels front paved area and onto the road (sloping drive so a bit of a step down which the sill bottomed out on ). Out on the road, massive improvement on the worn stock set up (or Uncle Buck spec as Tim put it ;D ) nice and firm with not a lot of roll either. Did bottom out the floor at one point on the way home, I don't think it'll be the last time either Currently it is set with 4 1/2 threads showing on the front and 7 on the rears, plus the helper springs are still fitted so could go a fair bit lower still if I wanted (but i think it is low enough for me ) Guess you'll want to see some pics then

Bargain price on coilovers! Might have to get some on my Mrs MX when she's not looking. Banded steels in satin black FTW.

I didn't think it would look good slammed tbh. But the roughness around the edges, and the steelies I reckon help set the car off from a Style perspective. Quite liking that!

thats low and tasty, bandeds are gonna look swish. what mm do those rokkor coilies go down to? well they say 100mm, but I could go about 10mm more on the nose and 20 on the back, plus I could take out the helper springs which woudl prob take me down another inch Plus the springs still need to settle/bed in so will prob drop a bit more anyway

Get a proper wheel alignment done. Fitting coilovers means disturbing the adjusters and these Mazzas don't like poor wheel geometry. Assuming it's not had any smacks the factory adjusters are man enough to deal with just about anything and it will be a real b-road weapon.

Assuming it's not had any smacks the factory adjusters are man enough to deal with just about anything and it will be a real b-road weapon. Once the suspension as settled and the ride height finalised (need to see how much it drops by over the next moth as the springs settle in) and the new rims are fitted (as they may dictate how much camber is needed ) then it will be going in for a set up. But it is driving very well on the current setting, isn't wondering or pulling or jumping about over bumps.

Thought I best bring this upto date as things have moved on a fair bit since I last updated ;D A phone cal from Bruce inviting me over to Area 52's painting weekend as one of the cars to be painted lead to a very hectic 2 weeks A rushed trip over to Seth had me in posession of a good set of wings and front bumper which where duly fitted (after much swearing at 2 stupid rounded off nuts ) which left the Eunos looking like this and we found this when we removed the wings then a few more days spent prepping and smoothing and it was ready for the weekend. After a good stint with the DA prepping and it looked like this Then this to this with a bit of this resulting in this which ended like this Don't worry, i've not gone all shiny, its an RAF paint, PRU blue satin. Next up is getting the wheels banded (got some mk2 MX alloys with good tyres do that I can take the steels off and get them to JamesP, 8's on the front and 8.5's for the rear ), and then sort out the diff hopefully in time for the gathering
