Hi All, Picked up my new project yesterday - one car I've fancied for a while - a late MK1 MR2. On the positive side - car has an MOT until June 2011, road tax to Dec.2010. Very nice interior. No rust at all along the windshield. Sills are perfect! On the negative side - rust in usual places on rear arches - but not as bad as some seem to be. One rust hole on the n/s wing. Clutch slipping and noisy release bearing. Idling high (failed waxstat) A few pics: Offside front wing - no rust damage: Offside rear arch bottom: previously welded (not very well though!) Nearside rear arch bottom, but end of sill is solid! N/s front wing rust damage - full of crud behind the plastic shield and had a previous bodge repair of silicone filler! O/S front wing - full of crud and leaves but no rust damage and sill solid! Jobs to do - Weld in repair rear arch sections Repair front wing (weld) Rust proof sills and arches Remove engine - replace clutch, timing belt and service engine Clean engine bay Fix waxstat Replace exhaust (looks very very tired!)

cheers - quite happy the rust is not as bad as it could have been. There is an urgent need to protect the underneath of the car as surface rust and some deeper damage is clear - but nothing so far, looks holed. Even with the slipping clutch - the car seemed pretty quick too.

Spooky, when I bought mine (also 1989, mica blue), it had a slipping clutch, grumbly bearings, dodgy waxstat and a bit of rust on one of the rear wings ;D
Looks a good example, and a decent price - Speedle's right, these are starting to get more expensive now.

How easy a job is the engine drop? I've looked through some guides on the MK1 forum and it seems fiddly rather than too difficult (lots of connections/hoses to remove).

Hello there from another mk1 owner. Looks very nice. I paid £400 for mine and it looks similar in condition apart from I had to replace the entire engine as the bottom end had gone! I replaced the front wings with some cost effective glassfibre ones but haven't fixed the rear archer yet. As for the waxstat; They're a rubbish design! Mine's not too bad as it only plays up on the really hot days but have you looked in to the manual choke conversion?

HI Thanks for the note - I;ve read about the manual conversion on the forums - but not yet dug deep into it. Sounds as though you can also simply bypass it and just spend a few mins warming the engine before moving off? Should the aerial also be electric (if original)? Thanks Ian

From what I understand you can take off the air filter to get access and plug the hole in the inlet to disable it. Not tried it myself. The aerial should be an automatic electric one, yeah.

I had two of these, both early Sherwood models (green over pale gold). Loved em! If I didnt have two kids now, I'd consider another. I dream that if I win the eurolottery, I'll set up an MR2 MK1 garage, buying up all old ones and restoring them. For no profit, just to keep as many going as poss! Good luck, and don't modify it too much, these are guaranteed to be classics in the near future.

Thanks for comments Won;t be modifying it at all (as a) can't afford it and b) prefer originality (and it sells better!)) Cheers

I began the engine removal late yesterday afternoon - pretty slow as I was a bit unwell - but a few pics of the end of the day are below: *alot* of electrical connections and water pipes to remove! Engine and bay in desperate need of a clean and service!

Engine out this afternoon - and quite a pig to remove compared with VW and porsche engines of the same period (which I am more familiar with) Can't wait till I have to put it back....!

INstalled the engine over the weekend. Amazingly I seem to have reconnected everything OK except for one connection around the alternator that I have to check. Next: Bleed clutch Check timing and adjust INstall exhaust when I get a decent used spare Repair rear valence Finish repair of the rear sills Add coolant Change oil Change fuel filter

Final update and car is now almost ready as my new winter hack. Exhaust fitted Welding done and now sprayed up Bled cooling and clutch New oil and fuel filter/air filter My aim is not to get to as new or concourse, so I am leaving some jobs (such as the now rustproofed small hole in the nearside front wing) - and just making sure the car is solid and sound again. Final job is to run the engine and tune it a bit - still got a timing issue to sort out. o/s rear arch o/s rear arch after: n/s rear arch
