I'd like one on that little peugeot in my signature.
It's a 1991 1.1litre carb model.
What do I need to look for, and how do I go about doing it?

assuming its like a polo with a carb of the same age, you'll probably have electronic ignition using a sensor on the distributor and a single coil. there would normally be 3 connections for a rev counter:-
1) an earch connection
2) a switched +12V from the ignition switch (or another circuit that comes on with the ignition, possibly the + termnal on the coil)
3) a connection to the -ve terminal on the coil, which gives the signal to operate the rev counter.
if you're buying a new rev counter you'll probably be ok, but some older ones for cars upto the mid 1970's would require different wiring

Looks like this'll be easier than I thought (I'll have a splosh of BBQ sauce on those words when its time to eat them)
The distributor has an unused three-pin socket in the top of it and I havent been able to tell for the life of me what its for. Same situation on all the other scap 205's I've seen, too.
As I understood it, no 205's were fitted with the instrument cluster containing the rev-counter except for the GTi. Then I saw a 205 for sale, a year or two older than mine and powered by a 1.4 carb motor (so same engine as mine just a little larger), that had the rev-counter dash fitted.
I'd be interested to know how viable it'd be to fit one of these if anyone knew, assuming I can find one (peugeot forum is somewhat dead unfortunately).
Alternatively I don't mind at all fitting a pod-like rev counter just straight to the dash.

Now RE that blank plug on the dizzy, if it is indeed an earth, switched 12v and spur from the low tension side of the coil for a rev counter, if anyone could enlighten me as to which is which I'd be very grateful

The XS had a rev counter and I think was the same dash type as the other non GTis, but good look finding one for sale. You would probably need to provision for the other gauges you are missing as well (temp etc). I'm thinking of adding a rev counter for mine as well as it is a bit lacking in dash based info (doesn't even have a clock). I'll look through the wiring diagrams I have tonight to see what I can find. I was thinking a pod mounted where the coin tray should be (the triangular panel on the left-hand side of the instruments) as this could easily be replaced leaving no visible holes etc if it looked silly.

No clock? what year is yours just out of interest?
All the ones in my local yeard are same as mine: ie, central speedometer, clock on the left and fuel gauge on the right.
Having a rev counter would be very useful, and come to think of it I do object on principle to not having a temperture gauge...

No clock? what year is yours just out of interest? ... I do object on principle to not having a temperture gauge... Its an '88 Junior, no clock on the left just an empty space with a peugeot logo, I'm going to get a digital one from a GTi I think as it is one of those things you don't realise you use so much until it is missing. Yeah temp gauge would be nice as well, The big light that says STOP isn't that helpful really. |

   According to the manual tacho is one of the 4 pins from the coil (61 is the coil, 64 is the dash and L is the tacho.) I would check to see if the wiring is already in the multi plug for the dash. The manual also suggests that you can take the separate parts of the dash out and replace them so you could replace the clock with the rev counter from a xs / gt. |
