The car is currently on ebay so i've copied across the description of it but taken out the non RR relevant parts. To find the car on ebay simply put "Ford Capri 1600Gt Gold" in as the search.
1970 Ford Capri 1600Gt Pre-facelift With Rover V8 Fitted.
It has been a really tough decision but i've decided to sell my Capri due to now only having a standard size garage to keep her in so don't have the room now undercover to maintain and cherish her.
She's a 1970 Mk1 pre-facelift 1600Gt but has been "slightly" modified as you can see from the pics.
I don't have any documented history about the car but have heard the same history from a number of people, some of those that have known the car from way back in the 70's. Here's what I know.....
Was taken from the Ford production line in early 1970 by a paint company called "Paint Techniques" as a standard Gold 1600Gt, they then set about moulding and manufacturing the front spoiler, wheel arches and rear end before painting the car in the Gold Metalflake she still wears today. At this point it was just a rolling shell so the windows were painted black from the inside as there was no interior fitted. The rear axle was basically a scaffold pole with hubs welded on each end.
The car was used as a "show piece" for the next 7-8 years to exhibit the paintwork of the above company. It picked up a few trophies along the way from shows at Alexander palace etc. When you look under the car, the Outriggers are showing signs of abuse, this I have been told is due to the car was lifted by forklit truck on and off of a flat bed when taken to shows and the damage is a result of that.
It was then sold and came to Suffolk and was stored for a few years. After a while it was then set upon and fitted up for road use. This is when the engine was fitted, its a 3500cc Rover V8 with a 3 speed Auto box, it has Capri 3.0 Front legs and the rear axle is from a Volvo so it has rear disc brakes, it has anti-tramp bars fitted also. It is fitted with twin side exit Exhausts and the sound from them is just simply awesome. The wheels on the front are original 4 stud Slot mags and the wheels on the rear are 5 stud Weller items. The interior was never completely finished, just "cobbled together" with what was available at the time, since owning the car i've fitted the front seats from a Capri 280 and have the rears so the rear seats can be trimmed to match. I've also changed the sump and rocker gaskets as the original cork ones had dried out and were leaking somewhat. The front tyres could do with changing as they seem to of gone "square" but I have some i'll throw in with the sale.
It has electric windows fitted that work and also has a bootlid "remote" lever inside the car. The temperature guage is fitted in the bonnet "bulge" and the bulge has been "modified" too so it sits taller than standard and also has an additional ridge round it. The speedo is showing just under 15,000 miles but i'm lead to believe from the previous owner that it has infact only done around 1500 miles since being built and the clocks in it were what was available to him, but as I have nothing in writing to prove this i've advertised it as 15,000 miles.
Since 2005 the car has only covered approx 15 miles and i've done most of them so it would benefit from a good service and setting up as it does run rather rich at the moment but this probably wasn't helped by the fact that when I got it the petrol in her was stale. She has twin batteries that are located in the boot and also has the safety "red key" fitted so prolong battery life if not used for any period of time.
There are a couple of small "issues" with her, when I got her the radiator was leaking, I put some "Barrs" in the rad and I think this has worked but can't be 100% certain, the steering has a slight "wobble" but i've attributed this to the fact the tyres are out of shape from sitting so long. Also, in my opinion the front could do with lowering about an inch to enhance the 70's street car look. The interior really would benefit from being finished off properly if you're after a full show car, it does let the outside of the car down a little.
Please bear in mind that the car AND the paintwork are now 40 years old so she is showing some signs of neglect, there are a few small scuffs on the paint and the worst is the paint on the rear of the boot spoiler had discoloured and "crazed" a bit, but to me this just adds to the authenticity of the car.
Also due to the age of the car, she is TAX EXEMPT!!!
When cleaned and taken out into the sun, she really does sparkle and is a joy to see. The car has only been out in the rain 5 times and 4 of those are since i've owned it...... Collecting it it rained, going to Santa pod it rained, coming home from Santa Pod it rained, at a show I saw it at it got rained on and one day I was cleaning it again it rained! Yes I know it is sad I know each time it got rained on!
I'm sure there is loads that I have missed, if you need to ask anything please ask me and i'll answer it as soon as I can.
She is mot'd till june 2011 as I mot'd her the morning of Classic Ford show and taxed her the following week.
Cash on collection is preferred, car will not be released until any cheques are cleared in the bank.
Any inspection is welcome at a pre-arranged time/date, car located just outside Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.
