Back in the 70s, Toyota was using the Corolla Levin TE27 as their rally weapon. Driven by Mikkola, Andersson and Waldegard.
They weren't super competetive, but in 1972 they went from Group 2 to Group 4 and BMW Tuner AC Schnitzer made a 16valve head for the 2T-G engine, bumping the power from 150 to 200ish bhp.
In 1975 it won the 1000 Lakes Rally, Hannu Mikkola drove the Corolla to TTE's first victory in the WRC.
A belgian Friend of mine made a replica of the '74 RAC Corolla:
He even got as far as having Ove Andersson driving his car, and he also arranged a 2T-G 16V for it, but sadly Ove died before it all could happen
And they also build/used 3 TE27s in New Zealand, of which 2 are still present and this one is for sale for a mere NZ$40.000
