I got a set of coilovers the other day, new, but no comback or contact details from the seller.
They looked like MK2 golf so i took a punt.
Fronts fitted lovely but the rears are way too short.
Any ideas what there for?
He said golf, and they have VWGF in the part number, but which year had shorter rears?
MK3? MK4?
I guess ill sell the rears and try and sort some MK2 rears, just need to find out what there for first.
Thanks.

There only slightly longer than the fronts. I did try putting one on before i realised, even on full drop the rear rim was still well tucked in the arch MK1 hey. Ive fitted coilovers to a mk1 but so long ago i cant remember.

If they're for a mk1 then one of the holes in the front struts should be slotted not round, and there should be a ridge on the outside edge of the tabs that clamp around the hub. (as in the edge facing the back of the wheel.)

The mount holes in the front struts, hard to say.
The bottom hole looked a little oval, but not much. Didnt pay much attention.
I seem to remember on my old MK1 the top hole is oval and by quite a bit.
If i had to take a firm stance, i'd say the holes in these struts are more round than oval.
Ive got the fronts fitted now so cant check.
As for a ridge, there were no ridges i noticed.
The seller said they came of an M reg (mk3 then?) but as they were brand new, never fitted i took that info with a pinch of salt.

Bee scouring ebay, but its full of library pics.
Seems mk3 had long rear shocks (makes sence, i always thought mk2/3 shocks were interchangeable)
MK4 seem to have a different mounting on the front, but theres no way of knowing if my fronts and rears match.
Do MK1 fronts have ears for the brake hoses at right angles to the shock?
Its a bit of a mixed set, i got the fronts, a pair of complete rears and a pair of incomplete rears so i could easily have mk2/3 fronts and mk1 rears.
So, are mk1 golfs the only ones with short rear shocks? Anyone got a set of mk1 (or mk4) coilovers to measure the rears?

I'm such an idiot. I googled the part number (GFVW01H) and found a thread, replied to by phil who sells these in the UK.
These are MK1 golf and early polo apparantly.
God knows what the fronts were intended for, but they seem to be working just fine on my mk2.

Mk1 golf/jetta/rocco are all the same, short rears.
Mk2/3 Golf/Vento/Corrado are all the same, slightly different fronts to the mk1, and much longer rears.
6n Polo has Mk2/3 Golf fronts but short Mk1 type Golf rears.

WOOHOO, we have confirmation.
Looks like the set was for 6n polo then.
Fancy swapping a pair of new 6N polo rears (few fitting marks) for a pair of shop soiled mk2 rears?

Just for clarity mk4 Golfs don't use a coil-over-shock design, they have a separate shock and stumpy little spring (like E30/E36 BMW's, mk3/4 astras ect). Most of the cheap coilover kits keep them separate and use an adjustable spring perch to set the height.
