A Renault Avantime drove past me last night, and as I was admiring its rump I thought to myself, 'You know what? They might well be the coolest tail-lights ever.' Which got me thinking about other details that I love on various random cars; sometimes they're cars that I love overall, and sometimes cars that I'm largely indifferent to save for one great feature... nevertheless, here are some details that I admire. I'm sure I'll think of more later. The rear lights on the Avantime:  The fairground dash of the C1 Corvette:  The headlights on the mkIV Golf - when I first saw these, I thought they were a masterpiece:  The Naca ducts on the Espada's bonnet:  The mkII Cortina's rear lights:  The tower of side vents on the Alfa Montreal:  The line on the Vectra B's bonnet that swoops from the grille into the wing mirror:  The F40's exhausts:  This angle of the Renault 17:  This angle of the 288GTO:  The everything-under-the-bumper-ness of the Lotus Excel:  The big pile of exhausts on the Ferrari 312:  ...and so on. Let's see yours.  |

the '59 caddy tail ight- usually when used in other applications, it kinda get a bit lost in the everything else going in on the caddy itself-  '60 impala dash-  and my take on it-  |

To me, a nice design is mainly in overall shape and proportion, but there are some smaller features that give a car some delicacy, to make it seem completely thought out. Sometimes it's a purely mechanical thing of beauty that's made to be functional, like the scoops and exhausts snaking out of this Toyota 7  But also the tail of a Mangusta, with its split hatch and subtle vents. Especially considering they had to use stock Fiat 850 spider taillights, which is a huge constraint to have in designing a rear end.  The Datsun taillights are a great example of something unassuming but surprising. |

Ooooo I like this thread ;D There's a few really nice design touches that I've noticed on some modern and quite mundane stuff. Mk1 focus, small swage line that follows on from the top edge of the doors  Mk2 laguna estate, the crease that goes through the rear lights, connecting the line from the rear side window to the panel line between the rear bumper and body  |
