so are written ones if a government has a decent majority. I remember back in the thatcher years we all got together to support the ambulance drivers industrial action. I rmemeber in our local town centre youhad to queu for about 5 mins to get to the petrition to sign it. I remember it being delivered to downing street in a truck! It was the largest public petition ever raised in the UK, or so the BBC said at the time. And the government's response was "this just shows what a sizable proportion of the public are misguided". !!!!!!
They won the next general election as well.
Sadly its special interest lobby groups that count these days. Been that way for decades.

I have to agree with Mr_Bo11ox. I don't think internet petitions are worth the paper they're (not) written on.
I can imagine since the internet has matured the government get inundated with all manner of petitions like "Stop discrimination against chihuahuas" and "Knitiing circles are not terrorist organisations"...
Plus, before signing any petition I'd at least like to be furnished with the facts - what the goverment is actually doing, who instigated this (UK or Brussels) etc., etc. There is precisely zero information on that site, it just says "sign this". It reminds me of the "Stop the BBC banning Top Gear" petition some weeks back when in actual fact nobody was banning anything.
I'm not saying there's no truth in this, I'm really just having a pop at the poor content of the petition site, and internet petitions in general.

Practical Classics last month has the full skinny on whats happening with Cellulose. Its been discussed here a few times. Basically you can only buy it soon if you have an "approved" restoration. Not for modified cars at all. Car has to be detail perfect resto. 2K and acrylic will be banned and only left over stock can be sold after 1.1.2007 up until 1.1.2008 then you have to go 100% waterbased. celly and 2K primer will still be available during 2007.

Waterbased paint actually goes on really well, nice and easy to spray! For some reason every colour has a big tint of blue in it before it dries mind, keeps ya worried for half hour!
Its just drying the stuff thats the issue to most home sprayers!

drying it is my first worry - three big fans and a couple of heaters do the trick apparently. However how much dust will get in it in that time...
My second worry is durability. A lot of the waterbased paints have had adhesion issues (could be operator error) and they also seem to chip really easily. A mate's local bodyshop had had dozens in for touchups and reworks.
My third worry is how does it look? Celly has a certain look which is just "right" and most often you can't get that look with 2K, so how does a WB come out? Will it look "right"? At the moment apparently most / alot of people use a WB base and a 2K clear so this will look just as mank as 2K ofte does as its the clear that makes it look plasticky.

There is a cost factor with water based as well, isnt it around £50 per litre. I asked in my local motor factors where I often buy paint and they are stopping completely. :(They didnt really know any of the facts and thought it was only available for industrial use, obviously its up to them to find out for themselves but if they arent informed then who is. You will still be able to buy cellulose for boats and planes but how readily available it will be I don't know. Doesnt the consultation for the use of paints (celly, 2K, acrylic) take place this month. Always seems daft to me, announce a ban on the paint and then have the consultation  |

been down the paint supply house today, while I was there I had a chat about cellulose..... its not being banned at all, it will be legally obtainable for anyone for some time to come. the bad news is that, from this year, the manufacture of cellulose is ceasing completley. where I go they have enough for about 2-3 years supply. so quit worrying |

Its the supply of it thats being stopped I believe. From what it said in practical classics, you need a license for your car to be able to buy the paint. The car must be classed as a classic (there is no given definition yet though ) as AlistairK says it must also be standard. The colour must be a standard colour (so no choosing a vauxhall paint for a Ford etc.) and the license is only for that vehicle not for any other. If you have ten classics you need 10 licenses. I didnt know the manufacturing of it was going to be stopped. And as far as I know there are no restrictions if you are purchasing the paint to use on a boat or a plane. A lot of it will come down to individual suppliers I would have thought (so start making friends now ) Like I said, the main motor factors I use are stopping supplying, mainly down to misinformation and lack of understanding I am sure this is going to happen a lot. Especially until the full guidelines are introduced but by then it will be too late no doubt. |

So, if it's legal to buy for a plane or a boat... it isn't banned at all then. Which makes this yet another pointless and ill informed internet petition.
Why is it still legal to use on a plane or boat? And what happens to those industries after the supplies dry up? Or will they still make it for the aviation and maritime industries?

I don't know (and at this moment I don't know if anyone knows) if it will be possible to buy from automotive suppliers for boat/plane use, so general availability may be an issue anyway.

If automotive suppliers stop selling it, it'd be easy enough to find a boat supplier and get it off them.
I suppose we're gonna have to wait until everything's clarified.
