Have been reading a bit about epoxy primers and they seem to be the ones ideal for restoration projects as they are apparently 'waterproof'.
I'd like to but some Glasurit 801-72 but it seems to be expensive/hard to get.
I've seen ads in Practical Classics for Rustbusters stuff.
Anyone have any experience or thoughts on this?

How about Jotamastic? Cheaper than the ones that say "car" on the label, easy enough to find, and widely used in the marine world - which is a pretty hostile environment.
I understand that Rustbusters Epoxy-Mastic is closely related to Jotamastic.

Hi jrevillug. Yeah, after making this post I was reading about the Jotun stuff on another forum. Seems pretty impressive.
Looks like etch primer is well out of favour.
I used Glasurit 283 150 on a project and despite being worryingly thin it seemed to do a good job.
I was trawling the net looking for some of that but looks like these Epoxy coatings are the best.

I can 10000% endorse the Rustbusters product(s). We are a company solely dealing with curing the rust issues on Mercedes cars. Despite cars being returned to Mercedes themselves under (very rare!) warranty claims the rust ALWAYS returns! Our process exclusively uses a full range of Rustbuster products including the epoxy primer and enables us to offer a guarantee on our work.

the glasurit will be suited to say respraying the external body work ..something that sprays on great
rustbusters epoxy is thicker suited to maybe underbody repairs etc
I used up my rustbuster and now use jotamastic , you get a huge tin from ebay for similar cost to rustbuster and it seems to be very similar stuff...don't forget the have winter/summer hardner if you get jota

All good tips guys. Thanks.
I notice Rustbuster do an Epoxy Mastic and another Epoxy one. I assume one is for the chassis etc and the other for the bodywork.

Yeah. I stirred it thoroughly. It looked a bit translucent when I was brushing it on but next day the stuff that had hardened at the bottom of the pot I stirred it in wasn't translucent.
When dry it seems pretty similar to the rubbery underseal that is on cars from about the 80's onwards.

Can you still get "universal thinners" where you are? I'm pretty sure they will work with 1K, but then all the 1K stuff I've had has been RFU clear for ages

I've never trusted the one size fits all route. Spent too many years reading books (mostly American) advising never to mix paint systems with pictures of auto shops selling full matched ranges of paint/polish etc. Reality is I live in Glasgow and the customer experience is a bit different. Everthing you've read is dismissed without even a reply. When I bought my first celly topcoat they gave me 1K acrylic clear and told me I could thin it 50/50 with celly thinner. I did so and 3 weeks later whole paint job turned to alligator skin I found out later that the clear (Mipa C10) is supposed to be used straight from tin and have used it since, this way, and no crazing. I alos have lots of Metalflake paint but the supplier ran out of thinners so it is kinda redundant.

After all the deliberation and plumping for the Rustbusters Epoxy Mastic I have just got myself 4L of 801-72 for a very reasonable price From what I can see on data sheets etc the correct hardener for this is 965-60. The seller has some 965-53 for sale and advises it is the correct one for the epoxy primer. It appears the 53 is for CV paint...commercial vehicle. The important factor here is not so much the type of vehicle. Its more that their 90 line/CV range is essentially a water based system. The epoxy primer for the CV system is 801 703 (green) or 801 704 (grey) I may have answered my own question but it seems to me the 801-72 is only for use with the non CV hardener 965-60 and the 801-703/704 for the CV hardener 965-53Does anyone know if both are suitable?

You'll prob find Jotamastic 87 is a lot cheaper than the rustbuster gear (as in half price), and very similar, but hey you got some.
1k thinners is no prob but I've never bothered, 2k thinners is fine. paints4u I think sell 1k thinners if you do want it, or was it Jawel. Can't recall.
For "normal" automotive epoxy, Lechler is great and easy to get. None of that^ business with lots of codes etc. It's a great sealer, builds OK, sands nicely and isn't massively fussy on curing temps. A bit hard to find on paints4u as they call it "epoxyprimer" one word... but any shop doing Lechler prob has it or can get it easily.

PS celly thinners is fierce, but 1k does crack up with many layers, esp laid on at different times. It only likes to be thin.

I've used various epoxy primers over the years. And now using CWS wertlack epoxygrund I get good results with it, and not super expensive...
