Looks fine as it is. Typical BL managerial ineptness is probably the only reason why it was never released. They also considered this: the Rover SD2: Could have gone on sale with Triumph badging with a saloon version; they also courted with the idea of a Morris/Triumph TM1 saloon afterwards, but that also came to naught.

I think the real reason it was never released would have been cost. Its still a dolomite underneath and the dolomite was just too damn expensive to produce. The double wishbone front suspension setup springs particularly to mind here, by then all the competition was using Macpherson struts which are cheaper to produce.

I like the TR6 tail-lights.

More pics, including a rear view; note the 'WK' prefic, which is Coventry. With a few tweaks of the front and rear and some bespoke lighting, Triumph could have had a winner on their hands. A properly sorted Mk2 Sprint? Yes please.

As I mentioned over on the TDC forum I really do like this... I think it looks pretty sharp and a few tweaks could have made it jsut right!
However, I think that it became clear that even with a tweaked bodyshell it was still pretty cramped inside and generally a bit long in the tooth (its design dates back to the late 50's/early 60's) when all the new players were offering more interior space, more economy and more modern looks within the same kind of sized package...
A restyle still would not have made it a better seller I reckon, it would not have helped that much if at all...! Triumph desperately needed a whole new model and that was what the SD2 was supposed to be...

Apart from the dodgy fit on the headlights I think would have been a nice progression on the original.
Maybe a set of SD1 headlights would have worked better.

I think it would have looked better with the quad round lights of the higher spec earlier car. I always thought that the square headlights looked out of place on the original.

Shark-nose is very BMW-esque.

Alternatively, you could have Panther's rebodied Dolomite, the 'Rio' (Cost? About twice the price of a standard Dolly . . .)

anyone else think it looks very much like a fiat 131? That was my first impression too. Slightly different proportions but quite similar in many ways.

Not wholly convinced by the bumper/ grille/ lighting arrangement at the front (but very much like the sharknose thing) but otherwise rather keen on that.
