Okay - rundown of the situation is....
I sold one of my Supra's the other week, to someone for £700. Originally it was advertised for £750. I did them a favour since I knew them a bit, and knocked fifty off the price.
Now, it was very clearly explained that the car had no MOT or Tax, and would need welding work doing, and engine work (exhaust gasket) to pass the MOT. Pictures of the rust, the interior & exterior were sent, and they seemed perfectly happy.
I even sent a 2 page document outlining all the problems with the vehicle to re-iterate what had already been discussed on the phone.
Along with that, I put in the boot, a brand new exhaust gasket (OEM Toyota), new Downpipe Gasket (also OEM) & about £50 worth of studs, nuts & washers for the job (again, all Toyota parts), threw in £80 worth of Sony Stereo & speakers, 3 gallons of Dexron II ATF & a basic toolkit.
Today, I get a pissy email about how theres this that and the other wrong with the car. Two of the issues are minor. The other is them saying 'its got a blown head gasket' despite not having performed either a gas test, or a compression test, and there being no sign of the coolant overheating, or mixing with oil.
They want me to refund them half the cost of the car.
A quick scan of eBay shows that the same model as the one I sold, even in poor condition, sells for at least £600 with no tax & test. I think I was being pretty generous, all round.
Is this a case of 'jog on, pal' or am I in the wrong for thinking they're trying to pull a fast one on me?

Tell them to go forth you aren't a trader and you told them what was wrong with it to be best of your knowledge, there's no come backs on you, they were obviously happy when they took and they are just trying it on now.

Case of [Simon Pegg] jog on [/pegg]. Private sale at a reasonable price for the condition it was in - caveat emptor.

Yet another case of my generosity coming back to bite me in the 'arris!
I'm glad you guys think the same as me - they really don't seem to understand that owning a 20 year old GT car can get very expensive, very quickly. Despite me explaining it to them at the time, they were all wide eyed at the prospect.
I'm thinking this is a case of 'oh...it's more expensive than a ford fiesta? well nobody told me!' and they're trying to backpedal and put it all on me.

they probably bit off more than they could chew and expected it to work despite the issues.
not your problem, you outlined its condition, sold it for a reasonable price and threw in spares, you couldnt have done any more.
only thing i would point out is that selling a car to a friend isnt always a good thing though, in case disagreements like this arise.

This is a hard one, everyone says tell them to stick it and they are right, just doesn't make you feel any better, you are obviously a conciensous type of guy and as you say it's a case of your generosity being your downfall, unfortunately the world is full of people like your buyer. Know how you feel mate been there myself. Only you can decide what's best for you. Legally they wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

Tell them to go and do one.
I recently had a similar experience as well. Went and bought a car that sounded alright on the test drive but noted that the turbo was blown. Paid for it then collected it a few days later started it up and it sounded like a bag of spanners. It so happens that a big end bearing was spun and a cam follower had disintergrated. I'm pretty sure it had been driven around a bit between test drive and picking up and the turbo had been blowing the engine oil out. I should have checked that the oil levels were still ok before starting it.
I haven't even contacted the seller over it as I bought the car knowing it needed work ok it needed a bit more than originally thought, another engine to be precise but it was a private sale and it seems reasonable on the test drive.

I had a similar thing happen to me with a Honda Prelude I sold - was up front with the guy, told him what had been replaced, etc etc and sold it to him for a fair whack below market value because I needed it gone.
Ended up getting heaps of calls about it "p1ssing oil everywhere" which it certainly wasn't doing when I owned it, the rear brake pads being low and other little bits and pieces. I ended up ignoring him in the end, no matter what I would've done it wouldn't have been to his liking....
In your case it sounds like you've been extremely reasonable, have told the buyer as much as you could, etc. I would suggest to them that they paid a good price for an old car and that you were unaware of any issues with the HG. If they get nasty I'd tell them to get well and truly bent

had this a while ago, guy bought a wing off the mk1, i described it fairly, sent LOADS of pics of it, he was happy, didnt come view it, i posted it, few days later got an email saying he wasnt happy...i contacted ebay and got the responce of "if it was fairly described then there is nothin to worry about" i sent him a reply telling him if he felt that way then open up a dispute on ebay...he never did...
sounds like youre in the same position, don't let feelings get in the way, by the sounds of it you sent him all the info he needed, he should have come n viewed it if he wasn't sure! as above really, sold as seen, if he isnt happy its his fault not yours mate

Yep - i've just had the last email off this bell end that i'm going to deal with. Trying to accuse me of not maintaining it (when i threw money at it whenever i could), that there was a BHG (without doing a compression test or exhaust gas test) and they've subsequently taken the head off, that there's rust in places i didn't photograph (am i supposed to be psychic when it comes to rust locations?)
Giving me all the 'i used to work in F1 engineers etc', not that i believe a word of it. There's always at least 1 supposed F1 engineer in almost every pub i go to that fancies themselves an 'expert'.
I blocked their email address, and told them i sold it in good faith, with all the flaws i was aware of highlighted. If they're not happy, i don't care.
