couldnĀ“t have been more than a handfull of these that made there way over to the States eh mate....you got one? Thanks, Dave! Is that a 4WD Capri? Tell me about this picture, whatever you know would be appreciated! Yes, I have two of the 17 made. According to Ferguson documents, 5 stayed in Yurrup and 12 were brought to the USA. Of the 12 in the USA, at least one did some test work at Morse Drive Systems (who did the chaindrive inside the gearbox). Two of the cars went to Dr. Jodar's pro rally team which ran SCCA and NARA stage rallies with them (I have those 2) and received a factory Weslake engine and Ferguson 4WD racing assistance directly from the desk of the legendary Tony Rolt (he of Colditz Castle Glider fame). Have a picture of mine:

My dad was a design engineer with Ford AVO in the mid - late 1960's and early 70's. He did a lot of work on the Mk1 Mexico (and specifically a Police spec version), but I remember him mentioning the 4WD Capri [just thinking about it, I seem to remeber him saying it was 2600cc, so would that have been an 'in-between' Essex engine?] . I can't recall if he actually worked on it or not. At the time Ford had some sort of policy of supporting their staff who wanted to use their cars in competiton - I can remember being taken to Lydon to see dad rally cross a big-arched Mk1 Escort RS of some sort. I can still remeber the colour: dark blue. I can also remember the 'Apple Green' bubble arched RS he bought home from work a couple of times Hold on. He's not Rod Chapman, is he? ;D The guy who got the 3rd Ferguson Rallycross Capri (after Stan's and Roger's)? Yes, your dad's memory is spot on. Because all 12 of the US-bound Ferguson Capris got fitted out with Cologne 2600 V6s.

After much hunting and scanning i've found this artical from a 1987 Off Road magazine I had/ VERY interesting. Thanks, Trig. Of course, John Hill has the "only example remaining" part incorrect. But I guess he had no way of knowing in 1987 what was on elsewhere.

Hold on. He's not Rod Chapman, is he? ;D The guy who got the 3rd Ferguson Rallycross Capri (after Stan's and Roger's)? Sadly (?!) no, REG Chapman... I have seen a book about AVO with a pic of him in, crowded around the Mexio during its development. I know he used to go to MIRA, and also Finland and Germany for development trials. He used to come back from MIRA with a boot full of dead rabbit 'road kill' from when they were doing 24 hour runs!

I was sure I had a Cars and Car Conversions article on the 4x4 Capri but a dig through my 'archives' turned up nothing. More than likely because my collection only goes back to '73 and things had moved on.

Hi, I know this is an old thread but it is about the only information I found on 4WD Capris using Google. However, I believe I found one of these in a local junkyard. I was just browsing and found what they had labeled as a "Capri Capri". I looked inside and it had a switch for 4WD, and I verified that it had a 4WD setup. Does anyone know of a group that might be interested in parts off of this car? I don't believe it can be saved as once it goes into the yard it doesn't come back out... period (I've tried). If it really is 1 of 12 I would think that someone might be interested in at least saving the unique 4WD setup.
Thanks, Douglas

Hi Douglas,
Appreciate, like you did, that there's been a bit of a long time since your entry but did you rescue those Capri 4-Wheel Drive bits or at least know where they ended up ? Look forward to hearing from you one way or another,
Cheers, James

Look forward to hearing from you one way or another, Cheers, James Hi James, I didn't rescue anything, there didn't seem to be any interest and it wasn't personally interesting to me. I am sure the car was crushed, most likely with all it's bits. Sorry I don't have better news for you, Douglas

In 1983-4 what I now know asbeing one of the 3 Rallycross 4wd Capris was bought by Ian Forgan of Mercury Motors, Kinghorn, Fife, Scotland who used it in the ESAAC (East of Scotland Association of Car Clubs) Autocross Champoinship. The spec for the orange Capri was RS3.1 with fuel injection, big arched and the Ferguson 4wd system. It went like absolute stink and, when Ian converted to triple Webers, sounded fantastic.
After a season Ian re-shelled the car into a Mk2 shell, registered it for the road and entered the local Kingdom Stages Rally, part of the Scottish Rally Championship but he went off the road breaking one of the unobtainable front hubs (near side, I think but I was too busy as co-driver in another car to notice properly).
Some years later I heard that the owner of an engineering company in Leven, Fife had bought the car. Given his facilities he was able to re-manufacture the offending hub but I have not heard any more of the car over the last 25 years. This person has been a competitor in the local tarmac scene for many, many years.
I have to admit, I would love to be the owner of one of these (fully restored) beauties, but my piggy-bank is very unlikely to be full enough even if one were to become available........

Incidentally there is apparently another 'interesting' Ford living locally. 30-35 years ago Ford Motorsport built a rather interesting Mk1 Fiesta, it had a 1300 BDA powering the rear wheels. It was rallied by Andrew Wood and sponsored by Scottish Life, afterwards it was sold to a local man who, I believe still has it in storage or at least that's what he told me about 15 years ago......
