Had a call from Katie this morning from the side of the M1. Seemed to be a lot of oil smoke coming from the Herald but she continued with caution and an eye on the guages. When the oil gauge made a dive for zero she pulled off quick as she could and killed the engine. Then waited around for a while to be picked up by a flat-bed.... Its been loosing a bit of oil for a while from the front crank seal so I figured most likely cause was that a trickle from there had got worse. (We got the seal and gasket a couple of weeks ago but I've not had a chance to do it yet). This is what I found on first inspection. Never a good thing for the inside of the bonnet to be covered in the black stuff... or for there to be oil spots all over the back of the car. Uh Oh. There it is! I pulled the radiator out of the way and cleaned the front end of the engine a bit. With a couple of litres of oil it started up and pressure came straight up but no signs of it squirting out everywhere. No knocking either. But it was missfiring badly. A quick compression test found zero on the rear cylinder. The drilling for the rocker shaft goes up between block adn crank at the back end so hoped it was just the gasket gone in that area. I've just finished taking everything off/out of the way and got the head off. Good news is the gasket seemed OK. Bad news is it might have been the melted/broken piston causing the problem Bore actually looks OK save for a couple of bits of aluminium stuck to it. Not sure what to do now. Never had quite such a catastropihc failure.

looking at the amount of pickup on the bore of no4, Id say a rebore is the only way out for that Probably cheaper to find another engine. I take it the oil everywhere was just the (hugely) excess crank pressure from no4 giving way totally?

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Ergh, that is bad news.
As kee said the thing to do would probably be modern powAh. However for a 'quick' fix can you lay your hand to a know replacement while you build this one back up again?

yupp. Swap it, build the old one up again and then swap it back (or not) and sell one of them. Money-wise that would work quite well over here, but frankly I don't knowhow rare those fourbangers are in the uk.
ouch, btw.

Oh dear indeed. I'd go further and say "oh bother." Good luck with sorting it, whatever you do. Shouldn't be too tricky to get a replacement lump? At least gives you the option to take your time about rebuilding the original motor.

ouch, sorry to hear about it seth. If I hear of a 1500 going I'll let you know. will check at the local triumph club this way. unless you plan to go down the engine swap route?
Pinto plus type 9, gearbox mount and prop can be had from canley classics and engine mounts apparently* line up quite well. a nice Vauxhall 8V sri lump would work well 130bhp with stock looking abilities. can also be matched to a type9 gearbox
*never checked only been told

I did a very similar thing to an aircooled VW lump a few years ago. In the end I just replaced the 1 piston and the rings on all 4. gave the bores a very light cross hatching to remove any remains of piston and bolted it all back together. As far as I know its still running fine.
Then I did a couple of oil/filter changes at short intervals to try and remove any ali particles.
Really you should rip the whole thing apart and do it properly, but the above worked well enough for me.

I take it the oil everywhere was just the (hugely) excess crank pressure from no4 giving way totally? That's my guess too. Ouch! Let me know if I can be of any help I might just do that. How are you fixed over the weekend? I've got a CA16DE sat in a garage with a 5 speed box..... not going to do anything with it... Er, I take it thats a Japanese 1600 of some sort. How complete is it? A modern swap would be tempting but I'm not sure about timescales/electronic complexity. I have one 1500 left "in stock" that came out of a Dolomite we had. It was a really good engine, burnt no oil etc. but has sat (well wrapped) outside for going on for 5 years. The quick solution is to throw that in at the weekend and hope for the best. Reallly would be good to re-build a known lump though but I really wanted to be spending time on the Hillman over the next few weeks.

Yeah it is the Nissan Engine, as fitted to the Sunny ZX, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_CA_engine , Dual Overhead Came, multipoint fuel injection etc. They aren't ridiculously complex as far as I know... and just happen to have the save mounting points as a CA18DET (the 1.8 turbo charged version).

Agh, bad luck, but congratulations to your good lady for doing her utmost to preserve the engine!
I think I'd be tempted to put the 1500 in. If it's been well wrapped up I'd have thought it'd be alright, and it's a known good engine. It'd be nice to swap in a modern / different engine but I reckon a lot of planning (particularly planning not to use the car for a good while) is always best before starting those sorta things.
