Hello all. Thought I'd make a quick introduction. Been browsing the forum for over a year and love it. Don't own a retro (have a 2001 Polo GTI and getting a brand new 500 Abarth SS in 2 weeks!) but plan on doing one day I have a mate at my work who has owned his H reg Mk2 Golf GTI for 5 years. It's the more desireable 16v in Oak Green with the original interior and BBS wheels. The trouble is, it's MOT time in 4 weeks and the car has the list of following faults: - Brakes are on the way out - Sunroof seal needs repairing (expensive if not doing it yourself), I - Drivers wing has been keyed - One of the windows is faulty - Some of the dashboard lights have gone out With the car almost 20 years old, he thinks a few more things may creep up during the test. Apart from the above and a few odd rust spots, the bodywork is in pretty good nick for it's age. The car has done 150k but the engine hasn't missed a beat Now to the chase. He is after a nice Volvo C40, but to get that then the Golf has to be scrapped, and as you know he will get 2k for the Golf. The trouble is, to save it I'd need to find someone prepared to pay 2k or as close to it as possible, keeping in mind the faults above. This may not be a lot of work to an enthusiast, and it's a chance to save one of the best overall versions of the Golf GTI I don't have any pictures but can definately get some in the next 24 hours if anyone on here was interested, or knew someone who may be interested. The car is in Aberdeen. I told him I would post interest on here and let him know, so please give me a PM and I'll pass on details. He feels really bad about it, but he hasn't really got the space to fix everything, even if he bought the parts himself Cheers guys

Good luck.
£2000 is an awful lot of money for a Golf GTI with no test needing work. There is a really tidy valver up the road from me with coilovers and other whizzy bits and loads of test up for £895.
As an alternative, has your mate wandered into the dealer and enquired about what sort of deal they can do with no trade in? He could then punt the Golf on here or on ebay.

Before this gets moved to the F/S section I had a G reg GTI, over six months tax and MOT on it, scruffy but everything worked, sold on to a mate for £600. I think your mate will really struggle to get any where near £2000, he's looking more at the £600 I got. I've read a few threads like this on other car forums I'm on, just because the SS will pay £2000, it doesn't mean its worth that

That's what I worried about, you could get a semi decent example for 2k He is going to the dealer tonight. It would be doubtful they would take in a car that old with that amount of working. For example, I plan on selling my Polo for 3.5k private, but the dealer would only give me 1.5k

[quote author=speedman board=general thread=77669 I've read a few threads like this on other car forums I'm on, just because the SS will pay £2000, it doesn't mean its worth that [/quote] Both him and myself agree it isn't worth that, more optomism to hope someone would see past the money and want to save a great car On the opposite end, what irritates me is people cashing in their cars for the scrappage scheme, not knowing that they may be worth a lot more than 2k

You'd have to be a fool to pay way over the odds for car just to "save" it. There are still plenty of Golfs to save with a normal price tag.

Thought the scrappage scheme had finished now? Matt Me too - end of Feb wasn't it? To be honest, like supahfly said, you could get the dealer to drop a couple of grand on the screen price almost definitely, without the Golf even being mentioned. He can then sell the GTI for the market value and be up on the deal.

end of march, although there are still loads of orders to fullfil, get your mate to see what kinda deal can be done without the px,although I think the scrappage will be cheaper in most if not all cases, you can't save them all, look at this very very tidy golf vr6 I brought in for scrappage today. btw nice choice on the 500,i have an abarth g.p.

oak green golfs are not just your average white red black or blue base model gti`s they were only built in very limited numbers to mark the end of a run. in not to many years this car will be worth alot more than you would think, you just watch! he should just haggle the new car showroom muppets down £2k and sell the golf to a true dubber!!!!! way to rare to scrap and if he does can you kick him in the spuds from me and probably a few more golf enthusiasts who know where I'm coming from!

The golf was literally a £500 car tops. There are loads on e-bay going for £500 with MOT. Ive never understood this oak green thing on them hoping in years to come they will be rare enough to be worth loads more money. The only other car as far as I can remember that was truly worth any more money in later life was a Morris Minor Million. This was not really worth more money because it was a limited amount, but it marked a selling point in the cars life and it was an amzing striking colour. Oak green to me just looks similar to loads of other make cars. Sorry. As for haggling a discount I would be amazed if you could a great deal off at the moment. A neighbour is a car salesman and has stated he is selling more cars through the scrappage scheme than they can keep up with. Waiting lists are getting very long. He gets the same bonus for selling a car on the scrappage scheme than selling a car not on it so thats all the concentrate on. My sister is in the same boat. She has a 2000 Focus worth around £1800 at the moment that she wants to chop in. Ive told her to wait 6 months after the scrappage scheme has finished and then negotiate a much better deal.

The more Oak Green golfs get scrapped the more the remaining ones will be worth in future Matt

I read somewhere that a lot of dealerships had raised their prices significantly in the wake of the scrappage scheme, the example given was the Ford Fiesta, the price of which has risen by nearly £2.5k since the scheme started. So you really aren't saving a penny by scrapping a perfectly good car, in some cases you might even be worse off!

So, wait, is the general opinion here that the scrappage scheme is A Bad Thing...?
