Right I know its sorta come up a few times before on here, but no-one in the know has ever actually given a definitive answer to any questions... making it pretty hard for me to attempt this ;D Ive got the original hildesheim headunit for my mk1 that I want to bridge an ipod into... I'm not fussed about the unit doing anything else as its only a reciever (no tape) and only has mw and l.... but I want the headunit to look right and play thru an original (shape) speaker in the dash.... What should I be looking for on the chipboard to bridge into? I.e where would be a good place to connect the ipod leads? this is it ;D obviously any help is appriciated and will be rewarded with muchos pics when I'm not being told to get off the pc

My first try would be the third pin from the right on the bottom row in the last picture (Input to the volume knob) as your signal, and the bottom right pin as ground.
This will try and inject the signal "over" the radio signal, so you might have to cut a trace or remove that little mystery black component to the left of the volume pot to silence the radio.

Easy, phono leads from ipod to amp, amp to speaker. You can hide the amp under your seat, run the cable under the carpet and behind the dash and have an ipod mount on the dash. That way have the radio as well.

Isolate the tuning coil (should be a cylinder with wires wrapped round) so it doesn't receive a signal. So cut both wires, and solder a connection between the two old connection points/terminals. Solder each wires to IPod to the volume pot. This -should- work, depending on the ohmage of the IPod and the stereo, and will sound kind've tinny.

Yep, should work. I'd go with cobbler's suggestion and just remove the black decoupling cap to the side of the volume pot. This will disable the radio permanently. As it's a mono radio, you've got two choices. Either use only one channel - snip off one earphone, and strip back the insulation. The outer wire goes to the rightmost terminal of the volume pot, and the inner goes to the leftmost. Or you can mix the stereo but you'll need to get a couple of resistors (4k7 would be fine - value is not critical). Cut both buds off and solder the inner wires to the resistors like this. The outers just solder together and to the same place as before. If you still want to be able to use the radio, might be best to wire a switch in series with the cap instead of removing it completely.

Years ago I wired up a mono radio like this with a 3.5mm socket in the line to the volume pot such that it interrupted the line from the radio half. So no plug in the socket, it's a radio, plug in a lead from a Walkman(This was 20 years ago) and it's an amp. Very succesful.

Hey guys, just read through this thread having found it in the search (i know!!) This is exactly what i wanna do to the old Phillips radio in the other half's Renault 5, could anyone point me in the right direction? Here's a few photos of the 'board, don't need the radio, just want iPod (3.5mm jack) connection... Any help would be amazing! Cheers Matty

The volume switch... if you look at the soldered bits on the back, you have 9 tabs of solder that connect to the volume pot, you need to go along it and choose 2 either side of the swich.... (in other words, going accoss not lengthways on the underside of the switch) if i could hack it on paint for ya i would.... photobucket is full tho... on my first two attempts i just went along them with the ipod on, and the two wires split appart and conencting them to the different connections under the pot... It didnt do anything to my old ipod... (but don't try it if you care about yours) The reason i think you have to pick certain ones is at on is probably on/off or tone another two are balance and another two are volume.. sorry if that sounds like confusing curse word...

Okay, awesome, i've found the two soldered bits on the back of the volume pot, and got the iPod sound working through the Phillips! But, can you tell me what recieves the signal for the radio? I.e. how do i stop it picking up frequencies? Once i've done that i think i'm there! Thanks!!

UMMMMM no idea.... i removed a small capacitor like thing on the blaupunkt.. But on my pioneer i just bridged it in on the tape player side of the pot. Then disconnected the tape player motor and head and use a bareshell of a old orange david bowie tape (that it previously ruined) to trick the player into thinking it was playing a tape... (switched the radio reciever off and drew sound from the tape side...)
