I was going to post these in the Minor thread, but I think this legendary machine deserves it's own thread. To summarise for the uninitiated Nick Mann originally built this machine to do hill climbing in the 80's. it had a turbo'ed rover 3.5 V8 with plenty of trick bits and a Garret turbo. Oh, and nitrous. On a good day, it knocked out about 500bhp. The result? When tested by Autocar & Motor back in 1989: 0-60 3.1 secs 0-100 6.9 secs 0-150-0 20secs It took on (and beat) allcomers in the old Street Machine Street Racer championships for years. At Shelsly Walsh hillclimb in 1986, it completed the course in 30.07secs secs at 112mph. To give you an idea how quick this was, the previous day, Hannu Mikkola, driving a works Quattro Sport did the course in 29.5 secs at 109mph. Scans from the Hot Car test in 1982, when it 'only' had 400bhp: (on a tangent and just for fits and giggles, I've scanned the whole of the last page. Check the classified ads. have a read. And then cry... ;D) And the A&Mtest: 'Mannic' indeed.

Remember the days when sex was safe and motorsport was dangerous. Vintage bling always attracts pussy.

That is a serious car! The driving position looks uncomfortable to say the least though, the seats seem to face outwards towards the side windows by about 15 degrees! And I reckon you would have to wear special narrow shoes to drive it with that pedal box. And pray not to crash it, with only a half-cage in the back. Would I have a drive? Yes please! ;D

(like you'd be hard-pressed to remember a detail like that if you were told it... ;D) Imagine if either of these cars had been at Crystal Place. Just imagine... gibber drool...

I've had the pleasure of seeing Nics Minor run on quite a few occasions at York many moons ago. It really is something else and leaves a lasting impresion, that's for sure! I also saw it run against (his brothers?) RV8 Firenza in the same livery. Fantastic stuff.

according to comments on youtube it powers the turbo for the bda... Exactly that It's a 1.7 BDT; the turbine is an auxilliary power unit from a helicopter. The turbine runs at a constant speed and its exhaust gases spin the exhaust side of the turbo; that way, the turbo can run at constant speed regardless of engine speed. The whole lot runs through a highly modified MT75 4x4 set-up from a Sierra. Pretty much entirely home-built and developed, I seem to remember that the side pods and other bits of body are largely made of marine ply. Last I saw, Nick Mann was developing the fuel system so that the turbine could run off petrol as well, as it was running off its own kerosene/diesel fuel system. Cars like this are what I love about British hillclimbing ;D

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

As you say, its the british "built in the shed from whats available" attitude that makes stuff like this so bleddy great. Found some good info about it here.. raceenginedesign.biz/Manic-Beattie.htm
