small one goes to the ignition light, the two big ones are for the battery, only reason theres two is to save on having to use a single really heavy gauge cable.

ok as i thought, we wont be using an ignition light so can the smaller one just be let unconnected to anything? and is it as simple as running two cables from the lager ones to a battery source?

^^What about the wiring to the VR?
....or does it have a built-in style VR?

What Topup poster said. Yes, the two big terminals go direct to the battery. You have to have an ignition light on it unfortunately, otherwise it won't switch on. Just use a small dash light or indicator warning light. You might get away with a small resistor instead. TB, the regulator is built in

Two big terminals to the battery (use either, they are connected together inside) and the other needs to be connected through some sort of resistor/bulb to an ignition switched 12v feed to excite the field windings. Otherwise the alternator will either not charge at all/just barely charge. It has to be switched or you'll slowly drain the battery through it!
From memory, I used a ~100ohm resistor connected to the 12v ignition feed on the coil on my mini (Bloke who fitted a digi dash before left it unconnected and the jolly pain in the backside didn't charge!) This worked fine.

ah ok thanks for the advice, and all makes sense, just 1 more, as its a boot mounted battery, can the charging wire from the alternator go to the main battery cable that bolts to the starter, as oposed to running a cable the lenght of the car?
many thanks again chaps
