I'm not sure if we've had this one yet but I thought I'd post it just in case we haven't. It looks like it's doing the rounds on the net but I found it here: slammedsixty.blogspot.com/2010/07/k70-spa.htmlAppologies if it's roasting peas.

Wonder why he tubbed the front?
Don't need a reason of course, just wonderin' if he had a mechanical necessity or why. Just to look cool is good enough if that was the only reason! Cause it does!
But if there was another reason would like to know....

Wonder why he tubbed the front? It looks like it has a very narrow front track (Narrow beam? I don't know if/how these differ from Beetle suspension?) so I imagine its tubbed for steering reasons.

It'll be on a bug floor pan, k70's are normally front engined and watercooled, so will have a narrowed beam, hence the tubbing it's far easier to make the body fit a bug pan with the decades of tuning and development than try and tune a rare and fragile motor, the k70 was vw's first front engined car so prob had some issues.

K70 would have been an NSU if the RO80 hadn't bankrupted them first. The engine was a water cooled developement of their air cooled OHC fours

i really like that conversion; we have a very stupid owners club of those cars who only accept 150% original cars; they would be shocked to see it ;D TBH, the K70 looks really good, and was a clever design (the german R16 !) but the finished result was not very good; the early ones had various problems with carbs, gearboxes, engines, fuel consumption, and the overall built quality was far beyond the usual VW quality. As a second hand car it was nearly imposible to sell on .... but after 40 years it looks all different, i'd like to have one ....

I love that, though I was thinking "awesome" before I read about it being front engined fwd to start with.

That's what engine swaps are for. Far easier than trying to make the body fit a bug pan. It's only a VW because NSU were bought out by them. A car modified with inferior engine and running gear from what it started with. How super. Could have put an Audi 5-pot up front or as a nod to it's sister NSU Ro80, a modern Mazda rotary. Massive not want.

But then you'd end up with a front engined front wheel drive car that wouldn't go as low? Must be pretty rapid with a turbo flat four.
