Hi everyone, I fairly recently picked up a 1988 Mazda 323 Javelin SX, however i'm really stuck for what to do with it. Here it is in its current state, it was advertised as "spares or repairs" on ebay & I originally bought it to race at a local stock car track however after being handed a current MOT certificate and being told it was advertised as spares repair because one of the heater settings doesnt work I started thinking otherwise. I really want to modify it because it does look rather bland at the moment. However, there is a catch, i'm 17, this will be my first road car & therefore i'm limited to what I can do, I think I can really only do paint related things & perhaps interior modifications? Either way i'll show you my car & some of the inspiration I already have but I really would welcome any input! Here she is in all her 1988 plastic-fantastic-limited-edition goodness! And also an "arty" (not really) photo of her in the snow behind a lada: Actually, it does rather resemble a Lada Samara. Some pics of cool mazdas/related ideas I had, these types don't seem to get much love however the older RWD ones provide a few more ideas. i'm trying to avoid this sort of thing: But these are great: Now some non mazda goodness that I would possibly like to incorporate in my car, I love cars with graffiti (done well) paintjobs: I love the wheels on this & am thinking about painting mine similar. This colour is brilliant! So there we have it, sorry to those who I stole the images off but its for a good cause, I really hope I get some replies!

The RWD 323 is a blinder. There was a 4x4 Turbo one which I always had a sneaky like for. The general FWD ones like yours will need a bit more effort to make cool. At least you can about guarantee it will never leave you stranded anywhere. They are one of the most reliable old J-Tin eVaH.

I had an '88 323, I've been trying to find it ever since I sold it.
Mine was a beige pensionerwagon, but utter reliability.

I love the old 323s like that and yours looks brilliant mate. The old 323 turbo was always one of my favourite cars as a kid. Keep it fairly subtle I would say, nice steels or subtle alloys, lower, and a few nice touches to set it off.
Glad you don't want to go down the boyracer route, its got a nice line to it already so wouldnt want to spoil it.

Paint the upper part of the doors satin black, colour coded the door handles.
Slam it and put some 7x15" on with 195/45R15 tires.
Job done.

I love it! I think it looks much better with the pillar blacked out so I will definately get that done, unfortunately I think changing the wheels would bump up the insurance

i think you just want some decent wheels on it and lay on another few dozen layers of paint and laquer, get it looking mint with a really deep shine and keep it that way, and then save up a sh*t load of cash over the next 4 years until your insurance goes down, stash your minty 323 in a garage to show your grandson in years to come and spend all your money on something mental like yank muscle car.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

Your insurance is going to render most ideas unworkable I'm afraid. Changing wheels and lowering, which are the quickest win won't go down well with your insurance company. Don't be tempted to do it without telling them either, they just won't pay out in case of a claim. As you say, just work on a colour change maybe, including the wheels.

Thanks!
I didn't realize there were penalties on insurance for these mild mods IMHO.
Although the Enkei alloys will cost you an arm and a leg.
Twotone does look good on them too.
