RETRO RIDES SUPERCAR WEEK is continued with one of the cars I forced my mum to go to Shell for months to save tokens for. The Jaguar XJ220 was a 1:18 scale model give away with enough tokens from Shell and eventually I was able to swap my bits of paper for one when I was 12 haha Was the fastest production car in the world, 'til the famous F1 came along, at 217mph. Since then I fear it's been pretty much forgotten apart from a scary donor into a Ford Transit as seen on Top Gear a few weeks ago! Epic idea from my point of view And then on Wikipedia there's a nice quote... "The XJ220's V6 engine is visible through the rear window" ... pretty sure it didn't have a V6 haha! I always preferred it in blue tho!

Ah, it did - the original concept had a V12, loads of punters put their deposits down, then when it was released it was powered by a V6 that was an evolution of the Metro 6R4's rally unit. Cue punters lining up to take Jaguar to court to get their money back. Awesome car though, cheers for posting it up! Always loved these.

A 6litre V6 creating 542bhp! Good god! Shame, I didn't realise the production car differed from the concept by a whole 6 cylinders!

Unbelievably awesome rides!
My favourite feature (one of my favourite features) is the dials build into the drivers door card! YO!
it would have been nice with a V12 and I can understand why the punters were left cold by the notion of a V6 but in a way I think it's kind of cool! I bet it screams. Who cares what heat they are packing when they are blatantly very rapid!

A lot of people moan about the wheels on the 220. I don't remember them being rubbish at the time, I think they worked with the car quite well. I do like this one on different wheels, but I'd be half inclinded to put the originals back on

Spotted this one at JD Classics last year - you can see how low-slung they are, relative to the man standing next to it: Pretty damn wide too... ;D

I've always admired these things, and remember the unveiling on a trade day at the NEC . Absolutely enormous beasty and was also dissapointed when the production ones were anounced to have a V6

Ably assissted by Rover R8 200 rear lights: By the looks of the interior it's got an XJS instrument cluster and Escort mk4 heater controls as well

I got chatting to chap at a show (mate of a mate) who had one of these, amongst almost every other jag ever made... According to him they are just lovely to drive, completely docile and tractable untill you give it the beans, he said he ran his as daily for a week or two in the summer some years it was so easy to drive

Cue punters lining up to take Jaguar to court to get their money back. That was the excuse - the real reason was that the early '90s recession had just kicked in, and most no longer had the balance of the £403,000 required to buy one. Some never had much more than the deposit, but always intended to sell them on at a profit, as was common in the classic car / super car boom at the end of the '80s.

Very true. I read that in the majority of cases, people were offered the option via the courts of either paying up in full or buying themselves out of their obligation (i.e. pay the extra balance and keep the car, or lose your massive deposit plus pay an extra £100k or so not to have the car). And a surprising number of people did decide to buy their way out. Odd.
