Maybe the same gear used in the Mk4 Zephyr (or was it Zodiac?) police cars. Done by Ferguson? Weren't 4x4 Capris done for Rallying or Rallycross or something?

A guy I know test drove one of those for a week when they were new. Think the 4x4 zodiac got bangered unless anybody knows different we were on our way to pick it up when I worked at the recovery garage when the guy phoned and said a banger racer had got it.

It was in Classic and Sports Car a year or two back. I have in my mind that they made three but could be wrong. Tig, buy a rusty Jensen FF and swap all the running gear for big block Capri fun

Roger Clark and his brother Stan drove one each at Rallycross events all over the UK in 1970/71. I can remember seeing one on BBC Grandstand from Lydden in Kent. I think they tried fuel injection as well. IIRC they suffered from terminal understeer, and the idea was shelved.
It was a development of the Ferguson 4WD system which also featured in the Mk4 Zephyrs trialled extensively by police forces across the UK in the late 60's. At least one of the Z-cars survives, possibly more.

Saw it myslef at Dagenham a few weeks back, it's off the road at the mo because the suspension needs work, but of course there are no manuals to reffer too so it's a bit of a tricky one. They may have sorted it since i was there though, they said it was on the cards.
It's owned by a british chap who has sinced moved out of the country, Ford got it running again and gave it some fresh paint. It's uber cool though, although I suspect it drives very much like it's Furguson roots would suggest!
There might be some pics pics of it, and all the other lovely stuff that Ford have tucked away, in next monts Retro Ford.

There used to be a mega rusty 4x4 Mk4 Zephyr behind the little petrol station down Matchams Lane at Hurn (down your way Tigran) but it was many years ago. The car was too far gone to restore and I guess the only reason it was still there was the running gear. I wish I knew what happened to it.

I dunno if the Greenie is a pukka Fergie or what. Your friend shot pics from the wrong business end. And with a late-model, non-period "4x4" badge, so's it's hard to make heads nor tails from the pics. Fergie Capris production was 16 or 18, my letter from Ferguson isn't handy at the mo. And 12 of them went to Si Haberman's FF4 firm in NY, USA for sale. Period ads ran in the buff mags by FF4. TB owns 2 of the 12 cars. One is a special Weslake-prepped forest rally Fergie 4x4, built for SCCA Pro Rally. This rally car is featured in Brooklands Hi-Perf Capris book. Triple Solexes. APR Tony Rolt, MBE, he of Colditz Glider fame, took an interest in this rally car's development whilst running Ferguson at the time. We have the correspondence from him, as well as Weslake, to the rally team constructor.

If its the car from the Ford Vehicle Heritage Collection then apparantly it is the thought to be the only automatic 4x4 Capri in existence. media.ford.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=18721

That Capri is freakin' awesome I am sure I read somewhere that apparntly Roger Clark said that 4x4's would never be popular (after driving the Capri in rallycross). I know in 1973 Reliant worked with Tony Rolt and Os Webb of Ferguson Formula and built a 'one off' Scimitar GTE 4x4. The car was never intended for production, it was more of an experiment. The car sat at the back of the development department until ex-Reliant chief engineer "John Crosswaite" offered to buy the car. John got the car on the road and used it as his own transport for a couple of years before selling it to a private collector. The car has dissapeared off the face of the earth! I have been trying to trace the history of the car and its whereabouts and I was given these photos of the chassis: I know the car was completed and a modified body was fitted afterwards and I know what the registration number was, but the number doesn't seem to exist anymore?? THAT capri is sweet! Seen it before in a magazine feature in Classic Ford, the editor got invited to a Ford testing center in Norway or something. Where they got to drive the 4wd capri, standard (mint) 4wd saff cosworth and a WRC focus iirc, on a snow covered test track!
Good feature I remember them saying then it was the only one in existence

Crikey, didn't think any of them had survived. Not sure they made the FF as late as 72, might be late registered one. If it is genuine, it'll be as rare as the BDA Capri. Anyone ever seen one of them, think they only made a couple. Found and article, just click on each page www.suomencaprit.com/Kuvia/Artikkelit/bda/

Proof once more that Ford HQ is daft, especially as to its own heritage. Sorry to say, and a number of folks have done a lot to try to change that sad state of affairs to little or no avail.

There were definetely a few FF capris made I remember I think it was Stan Clark with it might have been Tony Mason going into a pond/lake in one on either the 1970 or 71 RAC rally. By remember I wasnt actually there it was on the greatest years of rallying the 70`s vid. Honest It wasnt massively competitive at the time and then 4 wheel drive was banned until the quattro came out so it never got much development. Ferguson made quite a few one offs and specials as well. There are even FF monzas
