hi all my brother has a small bumper mk2 16valve on an f plate and it runs ok but on heavy load ie full throtle or past 5 thousand rpm develops a missfire.we thought it would be electrical so have replaced the entire ignition system.new dissy leads plugs cap arm and amplifier. I didnt get any better.so we looked at the fuel system .we found no 4 injector wasnt spraying in a nice way so we swapped that and it was still the same.allthough it sprays nice now.so we changed the metering head for a known good one and it is still the same.we found the ecu had water in it at some point so changed that and it got a little better.so I compression tested it and go 180psi across all four so I don't know where to turn now.if you have any ideas please share I'm getting ready to burn it cheers russ

please can I just ask the car is a mk2 WHAT??
sorry but I keep reading on here about mk1 bits for sale or a running problem with a mk2 etc........
if it was a one car forum (eg mini forum eg) then I can understand.. but we talk about all kinds of cars here.. so when u say mk2 I really cant mind read and havent a clue which mk2 you are talking about..
I know this sounds like a rant and I'm sure its just an oversight but for me I have to assume what car you are talking about...?
rant over sorry.. si

is it that difficult to add that to the title though?? that is all I'm asking.. maybe I'm wrong? maybe I'm grouchy right now?! maybe not? it just annoys me.. I'm gonna shut it now though and wont hijack anymore.. not sure on the running problem but maybe fuelpump pressure dropping at higher revs? filter or pickup in tank dirty etc??? si

A mate of mine had the same problem & i traced it to the fuel lift pump in the tank after he had changed everything like you have done & he also changed the main pump mounted under the car. From memory i think the tank lift pump was about 40 quid & he got it from a VW factors..... Tim.

Had the same problem with our Golf, lift main pump was replaced and it cleared, though it returned a few months later when the lift pump failed as well!

Let it warm up a bit, the glitch on ours only showed up once the pump had been running for a bit

Is the wiring to the lift pump ok? One one I used to own, I had similar problems and replaced most of the ignition system, the in tank pump etc. and then noticed the wiring to the pump (under the back seat if you remove the little round cover) was burnt causing a voltage drop. Test the voltage there with a multimeter and see what you get, worth a look. Also, have you cleaned up the connectors on the ECU where water was getting in? On another one of mine (I've had a few 16v's...) which misfired at high rpm I found that crusty ECU connections were causing the timing advance to drop off when revved. I noticed this by hooking up a timing strobe light and running the car, watching the flywheel mark with the strobe and at about 4500rpm, rather than continuing to increase, the advance dropped off and it misfired. It was loosing a lot of power but cleaning up the ECU connections and re-seating the plug helped. Check the TCI-H unit connections and senders too. Hope this helps

Might be a long shot but check you have been supplied the right spark plugs, motor facter gave me the wrong ones years ago as listing in the book was wrong for one of the 16v s I had . caused similar running problems Btw "small bumper mk2 on F plate " could only be a golf why can t people contextuallise though the ranting was amusing me.

Have a look in the tank for sparkles - when one of the pumps is eating itself the first sign is often small bits of it ending up in the fuel and stuck to the strainer on the bottom of the lift pump.
If you haven't done it already, get yourself a new Mann or VW branded fuel filter, whip the old one off and empty it out into a bucket to see what was in it (it's always interesting and can reveal what's going on) and remove the main fuel pump (3 phillips screws that are often a bit rusty) and take out the basket filter behind it. This usually gets missed at service time and gets gradually blocked by tiny, almost invisible particles so should be rinsed, blown through with air then rinsed again. Watch out for all the unions and pipes underneath, they are often rusty and cruddy.
K-jet works through governing fuel pressure so everything that governs it or can limit it should be checked.
