I know there are a few scale modelers on RR and i don't think there has been a modeling thread in this new section so here goes ;D I mostly make 1/24, 1/25 scale model kits modified and standard some finished ones: tamya skyline charger KG110 Skyline (not quite finished, i still haven't got round to chroming the bumpers properly) mk2 golf + bmw z3 wheels RX7 and some current projects, first is a 4 door skyline i've already built custom arches for it then kind of lost inspiration, I'm thinking a 2 tone paint job might go down well. I've also go a few 'in stock' ;D show us what you've got!

lol! I tend to use the tamiya range of acrillic paints and and sprays they give a nice finish also being water based you can clean your brushes easily. The taymia spray cans are quite expensive for the size from model shops, but i've managed to buy some job lots of ebay which works out loads cheaper. You can use car sprays too althought they tend to be a bit thick. Glues I use humbol poly cement, you can get it with a needle like nozle for neater more acurate glueing. Surplies mostly come from ebay, althogh most toyshops/hobby shops sell the stuff too.

Arggh! Don't start a model thread. You'll have me reaching for the part builts again! Models look good mat. I'm liking the Tamiya Skyline I started this one, ummm, a while ago....... I use liquid poly glue applied with a brush as you can get it exactly where you want it and it basically welds the plastic together without adding any "filler". For body paint I've used Halfords a lot as I've always found their spray nozzles work really well without clogging.

I do a bit of modelling too, albeit Brit stuff in 1/32. I have a few (now damaged due to an accident ) decent standard builds, but I then went to town on an Airfix TR4A, which was turned into a wide bodied lime green racer. My next un is a TR 6 slot car based around the same kit. But this time it'll look completely standard.

Fair point Qwerty. Stockton Moddeler does have a far better selection though if you are ever in the area. Last time I went in I had to be dragged away to stop me spending £20odd quid on models!

I was lucky enough to see a few of Mat's models in the plastic last weekend, they're fantastic! I have far too many ideas and unbuilt cars on my shelf, and inexplicably I'm about to order a load more later tonight... My current build is this R30 Skyline on Work Equips, suitably lowered and with a drop of camber (rear end still to be sorted). Then I was meant to be doing this Fairlady for a modelling forum competition, but it's got no further than this mock-up using slot-mags pinched from a Monogram 280Z, still can't decide whether to use the blue or vanilla paint on it. I was lucky to trade loads of Tamiya spray paint with an American who was returning home after being posted here and was unable to ship them back.

Wowsers! There's some really awesome stuff in there. I've got a 1/12 scale chopper to build (my fingers aren't as nimble as they were when I moddeled as a lad ) but haven't had the time lately. I've got some die-cast Yank stuff, I must start a new thread when I dig them out ;D

You may find the Revell stuff a tad awkward, Japanese stuff - Tamiya especially - is a much better fit. Having said that some of the Fujimi and Aoshima models are somewhat simplified, and most won't have an engine (though inexplicably they usually have provision to be motorized). Amongst other kits and several sets of wheels, I bought this over the weekend: And eBay has recently come up with a few, including: Once you get a few things in stock you'll be able start swapping wheels about, then you'll want to buy some more like these people have available: www.modelsforsale.com/catalog/index2.php?cPath=10_109999199These modelsforsale people are really good.

Revell kit isn't to bad. Shell is pre "painted" which helps. Is there much involved with swapping wheels lowering etc? I was assuming they just stick on, that website link is very good. I also have been looking here

Swapping wheels around between the Japanese models is usually pretty easy – they mostly use a 2mm axle or pin of some sort, often with a little rubber bush which goes into a hole in the wheel. The wheels then just push on, so I suppose that’s a female wheel. Tamiya in particular often have male wheels, where the pin goes through the front of the wheel into a bush which is contained in the strut or a more detailed rear axle assembly. What I did there was to drill a hole right through the strut so the pin pushed through from the back of the strut into the female wheel. Some kits have the facility to lower them and add rear camber. Tamiya tend not to, so on the R30 I cut away the tops of the struts and bent up the lower mounts to keep it vaguely realistic, also pushing the strut tops in to get some camber. The back was easy – despite in 1:1 having IRS, the kit has a simple rod axle going from side-to-side so I just slotted the holes. I’ll bend the axle ends up a bit at some point to give rear camber. I spend more time dry-fitting suspension and wheels nowadays as I want to get the stance just right. It’s only meant to be fun though, build what you’re happy with and don’t worry if you’ve cobbled-up the chassis and painted all the interior flat black if it still looks good sitting on your shelf. That eBay seller has some good stuff! I haven’t yet bought much from abroad, it’s surprising what JDM oddities turn up this country. Usually I get no competition on them when they’re some dull-as-ditchwater obscurity, so get quite a lot of them for under a fiver. For accessories also try www.spc.org.uk where they have a handy forum too. However, the MFS store had more of the right sort of wheels when I looked at the weekend. Rmad did have a set or two - I bought some from him, don’t know if he has any left.

Sweet thanks for awesome advice!! I'm getting a lot more into it than I imagined I would, I normally detest anything fiddly.
I'm trying to paint the interior and everything at least close to the colours they should be. I'm going on an expedition to buy more paints etc tomorrow.
