You may have seen this in the for sale section of this forum, link. I just missed out on buying this car when it was for sale last year and wasn't going to miss out this time ..... I've always wanted one and they don't come up very often so it had to be done. I spoke to Nev (the seller) who was really accommodating and I basically agreed to buy it immediately, sight and engine issues unseen. I'd be up in Yorks that week to sort the deal out. He was happy to hold on to it for a bit for me while I tried to clear some space. Last Sunday I went to collect the car and spares ... Theres a lot of spares, doors, windows, roof, interior all sorts. It filled the car and the disco we used to collecct it. I've also bought a head gasket set from the states as well, just in case. The car is all ready full of spares, spare interior not in shot. In the meantime I got in touch with the owner before Nev, Giles, who's a bit of an old Scooby nut. Parts aren't easy to get, but Giles has contacts who should be able to source any bits I may need, which was a bit of a relief. I'm thinking cylinder head as these engines do suffer from cracked heads, and leaking coolant made me think cracked head. Long and slow journey back to Lincs as the car/trailer were quite loaded, big thanks to Nate (aka Gtidog) for coming to collect it with the disco. The spares were left at mine and the car taken to my local garage with the instruction "please fix". I'll have my local garage sort the mechanical stuff out. A guy I know from the Scirocco forum is starting himself up in resto business so I'll probably be in touch with him to sort out the roof and paintwork ... My skills aren't great and atm I'm way too busy with work to start trying to fix cars. I'll try and keep this updated with progress, which will likely be sporadic, but for me this car is a keeper.

Odd 80's coolness! I was just doing some reading up on these and found a fantastic fact - "Some of the four-wheel-drive models only had four-wheel drive when the windscreen wipers were turned on."

Yesterday I got a call from the garage ... the coolant leak was a split hose, that and some other perished hoses have been replaced and I collected it last night. That's a bonus and big relief.
There are some running issues though, it doesn't pull well between 2-3k rpm, I'm thinking timing, but thats a guess. There's also an occasional noise from nsf wheel, maybe bearing but not sure. I want to get the mechanical stuff (and always up headlights) sorted then drive the car a bit before I decide what to do about the sunroof and paintwork ... Ideally it could do with a full a respray

Oh, man! That's lucky - I had my eyes on this last year but it wasn't really the right time, glad to see it's been saved. The body looks like a challenge though, particularly the sunroof.

Most of the ones i have seen have been two tone -so single colour is rare - although later cars with "phase 2" alloys are more common in single colour

If anyone is interested in an automatic one of these there's a guy down South (Brighton area I think) who has one that may be for sale, pm me your details and I'll pass them on ... I don't know much about the car except it's currently road legal and in use.

Always really wanted one of these myself - so what is it actually like to drive?
Will you be bringing this to The Limes on Sunday?
If you want the body doing, Ant has just this week finished his spray booth... and very nice it is too.

Phil - yes I will most likely be bringing it to Limes on Sunday. I'm gonna run around in it for a bit then decide if it's going to be staying. If it's staying then it will likely be visiting Ant at some point in the not distant future I'm not keen on a few bits about driving it, the seat is too high, the air suspension too soft and power steering too light. Engine and gearbox are great though. I'll probably look at disconnecting the power steering and maybe fitting a bucket seat, not sure what to do about suspension though. I don't really want to remove working air suspension.

Glad you got it going dude, it really is a strange car. I get the feeling Subaru didn't know what they wanted it to be when they made it; Soft suspension and light steering - Luxary Saloon, Tiny back seats - 2+2, Turbo and 4wd - Sports car?
You can swap the suspension for Coilovers, they do kits for the XT6 in the states. You could do that then flog the air suspension onto someone else with an XT who might be after it?
It'd be awesome with some lows... just to find some wheels in 4x140 then..

Cheers Nev, I'm thinking lowered on some 15" Pug 505 GTi alloys ... if I can find some, or re-drill the hubs for 6x140 and fit some off road rims. It's been a long tiring week at work, and when I got home today I noticed the headlights on the XT were down; they've been permanently up for several months. After relaxing for an hour or so curiosity got the better of me, so I went outside to investigate. I pressed the up and down button for the lights, nothing, turned the lights on and off and they went up and down as they should do. yay! the car's fixed itself; so I went out for celebratory spin. Driving the car even with its faults just makes me grin

This is very cool indeed, nice to see one that actually works.
We've got one sat in the yard at work (its is a Subaru garage after all) and it really needs saving.

You can swap the suspension for Coilovers, they do kits for the XT6 in the states. You could do that then flog the air suspension onto someone else with an XT who might be after it? If it's a bolt on swap, keep the air components with the car. I totally understand wanting the XT to drive like an Impreza, but if what you want is an XT, that experience is warts and all - part of the car's appeal is that weird split personality. Having said that, I'd ditch the air if I wanted to drive it aggressively. My air-suspended L Turbo was quite impressively comfortable on bad roads, but didn't have the surefooted "pressure" reaction of a hydropneumatic system when pushed. (I'd keep an XT stock purely for the rarity value though).
