Hey, couldnt find a newbies section so just figured I'd start a build thread. Been looking at this forum for a long time, I love retro cars and always have. My dad used to race Imps and mk2 escorts etc when he was younger so ive been brought up around retro motors.
I've had a few retro cars myself, hping to get an imp in the future but thats a pipe dream for now.
Heres my brief car history
my first retro car, always wanted one since I was a little boy, my 1.6 phase 1 205 GTi
My heart and soul went into it, and unfortunately, After hitting a huge puddle (read lake) on a fast corner after a farmers field drains had burst, a stone dyke wall and 2 airbourne barrel rolls later I was left with this...
I sold anything that salvagable and scrapped the shell. Heartbroken doesnt even begin to describe it. Went on to buy this. My Nova SR, fitted with a 1.3 stock car engine, it had all the works, race cam, lightened flywheel, 1 ltr gearbox. Fantastic little backroad car.
I wish I had more pics but I lost them all in an unfortunate phone vs toilet situation.
I eventually swapped it to scratch my RWD itch for my '82 BMW E21 316
That was a great car, really good fun. I sold that after I bought my current car, my E34. Which I've spent a lot of time on this one, and had a lot of fun. So, here it is...
how I got it (excuse the blackberry pics, I eventually got a new phone so they do improve!)
First thing I did was weld the diff, of course. Then bought myself an intercooler my mate had just removed from his Evo 7
then fitted a 2.5" straight through exhaust system, air filter, and EGR bypass
next up was to fit the intercooler. Turned out to be quite a task but its made a hell of a difference...
Now, with the Boost screwed right up, intercooler fitted, egr and exhaust done, next on the list was to keep the engine bay cool. First two outings at crail it was getting very hot, so I had to do something about it. So I went for the cheap option, I removed my full beam lamps
It looked untidy, so I measured them up, did some research, went on ebay and bought these speaker grills
They do sit better than that now they're properly installed, they were just sat in place in those pics
So, my next issue was fuel, I couldnt get enough! Much research and head scratching later me and my friend came up with this
A resistor wired up to the Diesel injector pump return line. Simply turn up the resistance and confuse the ECU into pumping in more diesel. Known as the every mod among vag users, it seemed the best and cheapest way to do this. This is exactly what one of these £200 diesel plug in tuning boxes does, but mine is fully adjustable and cost a grand total of 65p ;D
Anyway, I thats where I am now. I use it to commute 50 miles a day so atm most moneys going on general wear and tear, but that may be down to how I drive it...
Well, thanks for reading, hope more updates soon, mainly suspension
