Brilliant ;D I feel slightly less alone in the world. I have a 2.8 Auto Royale retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=100996&page=1 and it worries me when the few remaining Viceroys or Royales come up on Ebay and find no takers even at low prices. I saw this one listed twice recently and am glad someone has bought it. They're such a rare bird, the old Viceroys. Hope it doesn't give you too much grief. PS nice to see it charging healthily with good oil pressure and a nice low idle

You definaty need some more petrol though!
These were rare back in the day so must be nearly extinct now! Take it this was Vauxhalls range topper at the time as it seems to be ridiculously well speccd for a British car of that time? What do the buttons on the wheel do?
Also will a 5 speed go in these does anyone know? It'd be a great cruiser if so.
Anyways, great find and in great usable condition - Good luck with it and keep us updated

very nice - not sooooo crusty for an old vauxhall so you definitely did well with this one. Plans? - It's RR, so there's ALWAYS plans

This is the one from Ambleside, isn't it.
I've got a sneaking suspicion - and it may be wrong - that I know that car. Back in the 1990s, when I worked in Kelso at our publishing company, one contributor (and damned if I can remember his name now, but I'm fairly sure it wasn't the man who wrote crosswords for our magazines, but someone else - most likely a photographer specialising in landscapes or nature in some way) came to visit. I had my old VX1800 and Manta I think, and obviously was very interested in the Viceroy. He's the one that told me that they were the "last of the White Cross Vauxhalls".
If it is the same one, and geography and statistically it probably is though the mileage suggests otherwise, then it was absolutely immaculate when it was 14 or so years old.

Cripes, that is a beauty... I do love the 'BIG' vauxhalls and the Viceroy is no exception! I often wonder why it was made really as it was pretty much just a Carlton with a 6-cylinder lump in it, a bit of a weird decision by Vauxhall to actually manufacture it when the Royale was in the range too...?! Anyhow, I'm pleased they did make it... I think that going by many of the Vauxhalls of that era that I have seen the rust looks (I say 'looks' carefully!) like it isn't too bad so best get on top of that pretty damn quick!!! Also, am I the only one on here that thinks those horn push bits are crying out for a bit of 'Feu Orange' enhancement...?!?!?!? Good luck with this one, I look forward to seeing it carry on doing it's job...

I would have though a Manta 2.0 5-speeder would go in one of these, the 6 pot engine is just an extended 2.0 CIH so I bet its not too horrendous a conversion. I suspect anything that can be done to save a few mpg’s will be worth doing, the 2.5 carb-fed straight six can’t fail to have fairly dire fuel economy

Vauxhall made it as a successor to the popular VX4/90 (or rather, VX490) sporting saloons as a sort of point of pride, probably (the pride bit. It's definitely a successor for the 490). Hence the white cross on the grille. And it's essentially a Carlton body - no windows in the C-pillars - the distinction being that Viceroy and Opel Commodore were the six cylinder sporting variants of the Carlton/Rekord, and the Senator was the luxury six cylinder.
So really, they make plenty of sense - Opel and Vauxhalls ranges mirrored and historically relevant - only the UK got Opels as well (and the brand was more apt for sporting models, as we hadn't had equivalents to the Commodore GSE or Manta A, or Kadett Coupé).

Another thing to consider in the choice to make so many badge variants was that places like Finland etc. had, er, Strong Feelings About Germans in the postwar period. So where Opel may have been the most logical brand, actually Vauxhall did far better.

These were the rear end of the carlton including live axle but with 5 stud drums and the front end of the senator/royale.
The dash I think is diffrent to both but the rest of the trim is a mix of the two models, I belive just under 2300 made in about 2 1/2 years of production. Yes it was the last white cross car they made which makes it intresting just for that.
Plans Wheels, they are 5 x 120 so BMW fitment and I have the old ac schnitzer 17s of the E23 I had. A 5 speed box would be nice and has entered my thoughts and maybe I bit of tidying. Had wondered a few times about a 3.0l 24v in the front as well but will propably leave it due to the low mileage of the engine in it.
Will be taxing it on saturday as long as the documents turn up in time so will take it to the limes cafe meet sunday.

Ive got a 5 speed gearbox that will fit on ebay at the minute. I reckon find a rotten 12v Carlton GSi/Senator and swap that in. Should bolt in, whereas on a 24v the exhausts etc are different iirc.
