I know a couple of people on here already know about this but here are some pics of my 5.5 V8 powered Mercedes W123 project. Check out www.practicalclassics.co.uk and click onto my blog (I'm Matt Jones) for some more shots. There's going to be a 3-part buildup of the car in the magazine (Practical Classics), starting around January this year. I'll keep posting on this thread to keep you in the loop. I hope you like it and let me know what you think. Except Tom and Voicey. I care not for your opinions Needless to say, my S-Class turned out to be complete dog. Everything broke, apart from the engine... She won't know what's hit her. Mmmmm. Eeek! S-Class loom...

Cool That's gonna be a beast when its done!!! My dad has an old W123 250 sitting in a garage festering away, should really do something interesting with it. Look forward to seeing progress on this one.

I'm doing something similar, except with a 5.0 engine and a 190e! Engine is mounted, and wiring is virtually completed - the next major headache is the lack of space for exhaust headers.... Good luck with the project, maybe we ought to have a showdown at Santa Pod when they're both done!

Thanks guys. This is actually my first V8 conversion. Lots to think about (mainly wiring!). The W123's pretty clean but when all this palava's over with I'm going to give her some new clothes. I have spanking chrome waiting and eventually she'll get a new coat of paint and loose the chrome wheel-arch trims.
The engine needs some serious de-greasing but it'll come up nicely. Haven't got time to do block painting either which is anoying. Oh well.
Anyway, glad to get some positive feedback.

Showdown sounds great...
Mine is an auto, though.
Just out of interest - are your s-class driveshafts too long? As for headers, the stockers on the M117 I pulled out from the W126 are bizarrely well suited. It's just the rest of it that doesn't fit!

Yeah, mine's an auto too - just as well, Merc manuals are horrible!!
Basically, nothing fits at all on the 190 full stop! I'm going to be using the LSD from the 500SE in the 190 as it's ratio is much better suited to the V8 (2.24:1 rather than 3.27:1), the 500 driveshafts are way too long, I'm going to have them 'cut and shut' with the 190e outers and the 500 inners unless the 190e driveshafts fit into the diff (untested as yet!)
I've still got a long way to go, and having just moved house, progress is slower than usual. But it will be done, oh yes, it will be done!!
Wiring is remarkably easy once you've eliminated everything that you don't need from each loom - assuming that your w123 used the Bosch KE Jetronic fuel injection system?
Cheers, Martin

Yeah, it's got Jetronic. I reckon the shafts will fit in the diff but generally they are pretty long.

Looking great but have you done the important thing yet and fitted that 8-track?

Quick update - W126 leccy leather is in and wired, pics soon. Also bought myself a treat for quitting smoking - leccy rear window blind I've taken some time off work in early Feb so I should get it done ready for its Janspeed appointment in late Feb. Wish me luck!
