I'll put up a diary of the 205 happenings so as not to hi-jack your thread. Whats the 205xs in aid of? to help with the hill climb roland garros? coincidentally, isn't the roland garros rare as poor quality wobbly children's play pony poo? Yeh it is. The shell is pretty fcuked but the running gear is fine. The Roland Garros is rare (as 205s go...) but would have been rarer as mine was saved from the scrappy. BTW welcome to Retro-Rides, there are a few of us youngsters around (J.P and thedude are also 16 I believe).

My christmas present from my parents: Two coilover conversion kits and two 2.25", 8" long, 225lb springs. Lovely and hard which should allow me to go nice and low. I'll also be lowering the steering arms while I'm at it to try and counter some of the bump steer / toe in. And I'm saving up for a pair of coilovers for the rear from PhilJ

Started dismantling the Polo when I got back from the Phoenix Inn meet.
Managed to losen the hub nuts and the top nuts which is a start!

Looks good! I'd just like to say though that i have 225lb springs on my 205, and the ride is awful. My friend has 185lb springs on the same spec car as mine, and its so much better. Just depends on how you intend to drive the car though i guess.

I suppose it's down to personal taste, the springs on there at the moment are around 180lb and I find it a bit soft! Need to change some of the bushed though....

On the Polo mk1/2/3 the shock/hub assembly is all one piece which means that the kit comes with an insert. You dismantle the original shock, remove the fluid etc and put the insert in its place. Difficult to explain so heres a picture! So the threaded tube is welded onto that with the PhilJ shocks inside Not sure how long they'll last with 225lb springs mind! Phils kit is good for the money tbh. Note 'for the money', a lot of people on clubpolo appear to want £500s worth of kit for £200.

You could allways do the trick of putting the new inserts in with more viscous fluid I think 225s are about right. i had 250s on the fiesta and was well happy with it. Used to wind the shocks right up stiff too.

Used to wind the shocks right up stiff too. The shocks are gas inserts so not the 'refillable' type. If they die i'll be buying some decent adjustable ones. Page 30! Wooo!

Woop u are doing exactly what i intend on doing... making my own coilies so be prepared for alot of questions in the next few months hehe
don't spose ur rents told u how much that kit was???

the conversion tubes are about £60 or so before you buy springs.
i think building my own coilovers for my polo was the best thing ive done for it so far

Managed to remove and dismantle the front struts today in about 90 minutes! Not bad considering last time it took me 3 full days! One of the top bolts was welded solid already, but lots of penetrating oil and an impact wrench got it free without mangling the damper So this is the scene at the moment: Will get started with the modifications ASAP!
