About the time I sold my Caddy I bought a scruffy mk1 driver project came with a set of new unfitted coilies but when I went to pick it up the seat were different and the grille and waist trim was missing (so the price got lowered) This was how she looked. She lasted like that for about 10 minutes....cracked open the tools and she now looked like.... Engine bay stripped and 15 years of gunk removed, clutch hole has been butchered, and scuttle ain't too clever - would like to remove it but don't know what to do with heater fan. Interior stripped, doors are perfect - as is floor Boot has had some attention Battery tray may get the chop too.... All in, pretty sound, small issue of rear arch - nowt major and that's about it - or so I thought. Knocked up a tilt frame and went to town Underside bits stripped/primed/stone chipped Knocked up some wheels - not finished yet... Cutting the clearance notches Welded up Some rot I hadn't spotted or expected - hidden well behind this reinforcing plate which has been prepped to have the spot welds drilled out This don't look too clever Bye bye scuttle Last time this'll be clean.. My favourite type of coilovers - free ones :thumbs_up probably a load of carp too. Action shot! drill in one hand - camera in the other, could have resulted in a trip to A&E or a broken camera. Thankfully just resulted in two nice clean holes to run my loom through Out of the vinegar and coated with rustbuster epoxy mastic which is da bomb! Ok- so I have had this for 12 months now and got sidelined by lots of other projects (couple of bike restos, BIG shed built, kitchen extension, knocked two garages into one - the usual malarky!) I'm now cracking on with the golf. Engine is also being built, my GTD powered caddy was knocking 130 brake - I'm building another 1.6 diesel, this time with a hybrid 11mm pump, VNT turbo, custom manifolds looking for 150 brake and a slab of torque through a cable change TDI box. Also converting to a mondeo 10" servo with 25mm master cyl - far better than the usual VW 16v 9"/22mm setup AND cheap at £15 Righto - I'll shut up now. ;D

Great work! What always amazes me is how people are so matter of fact about ripping their car to pieces. Doesnt the thought of taking a complete car to bits terrify you? You start with a complete car then end up with bits everywhere and, it seems, at no time does the though "F**k, how am I going to put this all back together again?" enter your head! I so admire folks like you.

no not really.
done a lot of bikes in the past. only have a single garage and driveway.
I get stacking apple boxes from the supermarket, a load of ice cream tubs and plastic seal top bags.
As things get dismantled they go into bags and tubs and all get labelled then it all goes into boxes and the boxes labelled and stacked accordingley. The big lumps (seats carpets etc) and boxes get stuck into the loft and brought down when I get to that section of the project.
A bit anal, but when you've a tiny space to work in and several long term projects (four bikes and the golf) on the go at once - it makes it so much easier.

Dunno? Ripping out the scuttle is a common mod. I've got the chassis plate and the section with the stamped number. I'm planning to let it in to a new location. Should be fine. Only just got in from the garage (1:30 am) been cleaning up bits, sorting bits and working on my bike too - need to get that clear this week to get the mk1 rolling. Oh and my MK3 'state 'the cronkwagen' blew a huge hole in the exhaust and it needs it's MOT in two weeks. so i've been lying under that getting more burns than a heavy session with moroccan black

I've got to take one of my mk1s for a VIC check soon, how far do you think I'd get without its chassis number in its original location ?? I know its a " common " mod, I'm just amazed people get away with it . Everytime I ask anyone about it I never seem to get a straight answer !! ;D Anyway, more pics please !!! Sounds like you've been busy

Well...our house has a communal block of those stupid garages you can drive a car into but no open the doors - two garages per house and two parking spaces. One of the selling points for me! Missus has one garage and I had other as a workshop I've built umpteen bikes and several cars, the cars were done outside - everything including the spraying. I increased storage space by taking the ceiling down and storing stuff in the roof space above my (and four neighbours ) garages. It was never enough working space though. Eventually this year I built a large shed at the end of the garden which allowed me to take a lot of her carp out of her garage and take my garage from this..... Out came mr disc cutter, captain sledge and private Kango. } Half the garage contents out and dropping a wall carefully - still managed to drop a metal post onto my VFR that was on ebay to be sold at the time  Whacked up some shelves and some new lighting and a dab of paint and a few runs to the tip - think the effort has been worth it? The space, decent lighting, painted floors and walls is absolutely amazing - wish I'd done it years ago. Missus is less than chuffed. ;D

Very very interested in this project, especially the engine! What other mods are you doing to the fuel pump? i take it she has a 9mm head standard? Would you mind getting a good few photos of the pump in pieces, or a list of parts used in the rebuild?
Cheers, and all the best with her

Engine spec.
Having sold the GTD pump and turbo - I'll be running an AAZ pump with a TDI head (though I think this is only a 10mm)
GTD injectors unless something else turns up.
I'll also gov mod the pump and modify the grind on the LDA
A VNT from a mk4 golf will blow through a front mount IC and probably a 1Y manifold
Waste gases leave via a 2.5" downpipe
Head will be improved with a metal AAZ gasket and ARP studs.
The head may be 1.9 or 1.6 - all depends on what I acquire. It'll get a porting either way!

Having once owned a Mk1 golf with the NA derv-burner, I can only imagine what it would be like to accelerate without having to pray! A 150 brake TD must go like sticnk

Rolling your project around with no driveshafts? Don't do it kids. At least in true mk1 fashion it's quite happy rolling around on three wheels.

Cleaning off the factory sealant both sides has revealed more rot and a couple of extra non factory holes to plate up as part of the bay smoothing. I want to keep full heater functionality as this is a daily and form follows function. Anyone any good ideas for dealing with the heat control valve and operating cable that varies the water flow to the heater matrix?
