few pictures of my mini sprint. ive owned this car for ten years, its started out as a 100 quid scrappy find mot bodge up, was used and abused, failed its mot (big time) so retired round the back of the garage, then 2 years ago i decided to do this - i didnt want to waste the original mk1 shell, so got a later shell to practice on from the local dump this is self built and has a 2" roof chop, 2" body chop. the roof gutter is level with the belt on my trousers - so pretty low! unlike the more common 'roof chops' where people extend the roof to fill the hole, a 'sprint' retains the standard size roof, with the pillers moved about to line back up - this keeps the proportions of the mini far better - mines a little too low, but on a 1 3/4 / 1 3/4 chop the normal mini looks 'wrong' compared to a sprint. its all steel, bar the boot lid (grp), all the glass is glass (lammi front and rear, toughened sides) the engine is a std 1275, bar a stage one kit. it runs coil springs (the sort that replace the rubber cones), hilos, cooper s discs etc. all the inside is done as per a normal car, with cut down panels and is fully trimmed, and the whole car was done to look like a 1960's 'club' racer (hence debumpered look with bonnet catches and wide wheels and arches) next to a std mini finally, pictured with four others, and neville tricket, the guy who thought up the idea of 'sprinting' a mini way back in the early 1960's - he will still do you one now - the one on the far right is one belonging to a mate thats just been done ive owned and driven tons of minis over the years, and this one gets more attention than any of them! i did 800 miles in it the other weekend and people will slow down on the motorway to take pictures of it! (which is a bit weird!) it lives on the street and is used as an every day car most weeks, its very comfy to drive and you forget its lowered once your driving it. a lot of work, but worth it in the end, its not 100% concours or perfect, but is a usable, quite, rattle and leak free car hope you all like!

Have you got any 'in build' pic's as i have been pondering doing this to my rust bucket 69 when i get around to starting to restore it. I have got a good idea where i think the cuts should be made, but i'd like to see where some one else who has turned out such a well proportioned example did it.

If I had a list of my favourite Minis ever, I think yours would've went in pretty high up.
It's awesome!

That's pure class! Very nicely done. I wouldn't have thought that you could even fit in a mini which had been chopped AND sectioned! I suppose you would get a sporting laid-back driving position for the front two occupants and zero legroom for any rear occupants at all.

I have got a good idea where I think the cuts should be made, but i'd like to see where some one else who has turned out such a well proportioned example did it. ive got a few, but they don't really give much away. there plenty of ways to chop the car, the trick is to cut it in such a way to minimise the amount of distortion and filling needed afterwards. the hardest parts where the front pillers as its so critical that you consider the relationship between the door, the piller and the corners of the windscreen. both mine are slighty different (i 'improved' my technique!), but the screen cut down ok and fitted fine, so i left the first attempt to see how it behaves in use. the proportions of mine are actually a little 'off' the roof tapers front to rear by about 1/8 of an inch - a case of measure twice cut once (and more importantly, when measuring another mini to check your cuts, make sure it hasnt had door steps welded in an 1/8th higher than standard ones!! - still, someone told me it looks 'angrily areodynamic' so i cant be too upset!!! I'm just about to start another one, but with an 1 3/4 chop this time) - i made some 'sliding' templates, so its easyish to mark a lot of the body work out, the top half needs a bit of pythagerous to get the cuts on the pillers right - but its pretty easy. about 4 weeks work i reckon to do the metal work

I was thinking for the rear section that taking the height out just above the sill seam would be a plan as it is nice a flat and shouldn't distort to much there as there is alot of metal around there. The sliding markers sounds a good plan, had something similar in mind (but prob a bit more crude )

I tired of Mini shows very quickly because of seeing rows and rows of cars with 13" wheels, sportspack arches and union jack roofs. I tired of my Mini not long after. Yours, on the other hand, is quite spectacular!

Hi,
Where about are you based? I would love to see your car in fresh. Some of you might know that I'm building a Mini with frant screen and rear screen angle changed. I have raked 12 deg more front and 10 degs at the back iirc! This is total of 2" roof chop and this way, I can keep both frone and rear screens as std.
Oh, also I got Suzuki Swift Gti engine it it too.
Cheers Atchi

Building roof chopped, screen raked '68 Mini with G13B 1.3 16v Gti engine with LSD, Yamaha R1 carbs. As well as mk1 Suzuki Swift Gti AWD with a turbo. Drives PHEV Outlander but wishing my mk1 Swift Gti or mk2 CRX Vt were still with me!

Hi, Is it easier to do Sprint on mk1-2? I have visited Mini Machine when they had one made. I wanted one but cost of £8k just for body shell..... . I got mk2 for £600 and started to mod! I might do one myself with a Clubman Estate! Well, that will be odd looking may be. Cheers Atchi
