Here we go then, a new beginning to the Locost build. My dad and I have decided we want to hillclimb it next season (starting about april), so we have essentially 6 months to get it done. Unfortunately with the amount of time we have between us our original plan just wouldn't be feasible in the timescale, so we have enlisted the help of Aries Motorsport. They will be supplying us with a new chassis completely ready for us to mount the GSXR1100 engine, along with various other pieces including a full FIA rollcage, bodywork and most of the other bits we're missing. This should make it a much quicker and easier build for us, and will make it eligible for the 'modified specialist production car' class in hillclimbing. On sunday my dad and I unburied the the rolling chassis and removed to engine so that I can dismantle all the suspension: Got it back up on the trestles (lifted by two of us!): So the aim is over the next few weeks to sort out the parts we have and make sure they're all ready to go on when the new parts arrive.

Tube chassis and a high revving 130-ish (right?) bhp engine... this should be good!

You built all that yourselves and now you're going to buy a chassis?! I agree that it may be easier, but it's really a kit then and not a Locost. What will happen to this chassis? It looks like a lot of good work has gone into it, would be a shame to see it scrapped.

Nope, we didn't build it! It came as a freebie along with a big kit of parts as something we could do something with. Fabricated all the mounting points for the rear suspension but that's it really. Its not ideal really and needs quite a lot of work to make it what we want it to be.

Get a welder and do it yourself!!! I have a welder and the ability, i just don't have the time (starting uni in october). Plus the car wouldn't be eligible for the class I want to compete in as more than 20 chassis must have been produced by the manufacturer.

Was always going to build one of these with my dad - one of things that got talked about (a lot) but never saw the light of day ha ha.
Will be a good build, should be fun when done!

So today I decided to work out whats what in that side of the garage and start to come up with a game plan. I started by stripping the chassis of all the suspension and steering components, here's what we've got at the moment: Gaz coilovers (although one's leaking ), also Rally Design escort 2.5 turn quick rack: Front and rear wishbones, rears will be kept for use on the new chassis, fronts can go with this chassis: Rear uprights with XR4x4 hubs to suit disc brakes: Princess AP calipers.... pretty sure they wont be used as they weigh a ton: Capri V6 vented discs... again probably will be replace with solid ones: GSXR engine and XR4x4 LSD: Decided to give the Cortina hubs and uprights a lick of satin black hammerite while they were apart: Sierra steering column with unnecessary bits removed: Left looking pretty un-car like again: So the plan... I want to get as much of the suspension and running gear together and ready to go on before the chassis arrives so that I can move straight onto getting the engine installed when I can. I want to try and fit the ali 205 calipers onto the front uprights as they are much much lighter than the AP boat anchors, take slightly larger pads and don't need two inlets. The lugs line up but I haven't been able to try it with a disc on yet. So that will mean sourcing some solid cortina discs and reconditioning a pair of 205 calipers. On the rear at the moment 13" wheels wont clear the brakes so the challenge is to find a way to make them fit. I wont be needing a handbrake to I'm hoping that will gain some clearance. I want to send the dampers off the gaz and have them checked over and the leaky one fixed. Thats it for today but i'll update the thread as things come into my head

Well I tried the 205 calipers on and I'm alomst 100% certain they'll work I only had a vented disc and solid type pad carrier to try but it all goes together okay and i'm pretty sure with a solid disc it will be perfect. The pad carrier needed to be spaced off 5mm to clear the disc but i cant see it being a problem as the piston will still be pushing fairly centrally on the pad So the reconditioned Princess calipers and capri vented discs can go up for sale I also looked at what I can do with the rear brakes in order to fit 13" wheels. This is what the setup looks like: The other issue is that the sierra rear brakes are pretty powerful (43mm piston and 253mm disc!) and getting them to balance with the fronts (48mm piston and 248mm disc) would be pretty silly. People have struggled to get them to balance with sierra front brakes (52mm piston and 260mm disc)! So I've done a bit of research and found that the bendix calipers as found on the rear of 106/205/206/306/ZX are 30mm piston diameter and the same alumium bodied design as the ones i have for the front. Perfect I also found that if I turn the hubs down to 134mm diameter I can fit mk3 escort 240mm discs on there which have a greater offset allowing the calipers to be mounted further back, gaining even more clearance. So, if I turn down the hubs and fit the escort discs, cut off the caliper mounting lugs from the uprights and have some plates made up to go between the hub and upright and accept the pug calipers I should have a pretty light and small disc setup I hope that all makes sense! So the shopping list: Cortina solid front discs 205 front calipers (i only have damaged ones) Decent front pads (mintex 1144s) Escort front discs for rear pug rear calipers Time to spend some money!

Took the hubs into work today and had them turned down to fit inside the escort disc. CNC lathe is an awesome piece of kit! Plug in the diameter needed, tell it about the chamfer, press the green button and make a cuppa ;D Beeeautiful. Tried them in the bearing carriers with the disc... Now I just need to find some calipers and work out how to make them fit!

Well there's been lots going on in locost land over the the past few weeks! I should have kept this thread upated as things happened but i've been a tad busy so i'll try not to miss anything out. First of all we've order the new chassis, with welded full cage, from Aries Motorsport, as well as all the other bits we wanted from them. We'll be heading up to derby to pick them up on the 10th of October (anyone need anything moving south to north?). Meanwhile we bought some Renault 5 GT Turbo rear calipers (same as 205 GTi etc) off ebay and refurb kits for the front and rear calipers from big red brakes. As the rear calipers arrived: I also found that the rear discs I'd bought were the wrong ones, the ones I wanted were the much higher offset mk5 escort discs, like so: This shows the caliper, disc and upright roughly lined up. Gonna need quite a bit of fiddling but it'll work. Rebuilt the front calipers: I also bought new pads for the fronts and rears. Not sure if we'll keep them or upgrade but they'll do for building and testing. I found that they needed a mm taking off each of them as the discs is 12mm thick and the caliper is designed for a 10mm disc. Rebuilt the rear calipers, they cleaned up beautifully! Castle nuts and grease caps for the font hubs arrived from westfield, who appear to be the only place that sell them individully! Cleaned up the pad carriers and gave them a couple of coats of the good old satin black hammerite: I'll get them together tomorrow when the paint's dried. More coming....

Moved onto some engine work today. First issue was the clutch slave cylinder and the sprocket cover, which happen to occupy the space that the sprocket adaptor and propshaft need to use. The slave cylinder has bee spun through 180degrees and welded to an ali bar, which is bolted to the remains of the sprocket cover. Z cars had done the hard work, I just needed to chop away most of the sprocket cover and make it all fit: I've ordered a piece of 6mm stainless steel bar to make a longer clutch pushrod and then fingers crossed it should work. The slave cylinder will need to be bled off the engine but thats not really an issue. Dug out the wiring loom and removed all the tape so I can see what goes where: I tried to order a sump gasket but they needed a frame number.... which obviously I don't have! So I got hold of some gasket paper from the local motorists discount centre and made my own. Unfortunately i forgot to take photos off the process but it went a bit like this: Lay paper out on a board, screw sump to the board on the paper, cut around the sump with a stanley knife, drill through the holes, turn it over and bolt the gasket to the sump, cut around the inside of the sump. Sorted! So the sump is back in place and the engine is pretty much ready to go. And that's pretty much where i'm upto at the moment!

Good work. Nice to see somebody actually thinking about what braking force they'll need rather than bolting on either what comes with the donor car, or aftermarket stuff that is far too powerful.

My theory is that those brakes will lock with 185 section A048Rs on an 800kg car (my 205). I don't think they're gonna struggle with a 450kg car running similar tyres. May need to upgrade if I move to slicks but its all about trying it and see.
