Here's my '65 cortina, owned since Dec 2000. only 34k on the clock when bought, just over 50k now interior is in great condition Lowered (unknown amount, but quite a lot) on 13" Superlites by the previous owner (believed to be son of original buyer) Original rather tired 1098 engine swapped for rebuilt mk1 cortina 1500GT engine when the first one gave up the ghost. 1500GT stage 1 unleaded head and new webber twin choke carb (std spec) ashley 421 manifold with custom stainless system (not much of a silencer, but fairly subdued until the loud pedal is pressed too much) been off the road for the last few months, mostly due to having a nice garage to work in, but inconvenient to get to without another car. now solved by buying a second (although at '83 rather younger) classic to get me to the first one.. wonder what happens when both cars need work.. perhaps I'll have to just keep adding :-) like my modded cars, but not really sure she needs much more. pretty nice car to cruise around in, and pretty fun (but not terrible fast) on the twisty bits been toying with the idea of a different set of alloys or perhaps slightly more retro painted steels, as the superlight's lacquer is peeling. but anyway, here's some pics;

quite a few odds and sods to tidy up before the summer tho. If you look closely at the 2nd pic you might see where the rust is coming through from under the lhd headlight. been saving up to get that fixed, as well as a something a little fishy at the front of the rhd sill. Unfortunately I lack the skills with bodywork to sort, and I don't fancy learning on such a nice car.
First up though, is what stopped her going regularly in the first place. A rather badly fitted (fitted when first bought) alarm system that drains the battery quite a lot, and seems to have developed a penchant for activating the immobiliser sometimes when driving
I wonder how hard it would be to rip it out and get something simpler (and less battery draining) put in The current one's got lots of extra un-used features like remote starting, door popping etc. For my own benefit I'd be happy with taking out the rotor arm or something, but I'm guessing that might not always be practical (or very pleasing to the insurance company).
I guess it's designed so that ripping it out isn't exactly easy. I'm pretty good with electrics, and there isn't really much of that anyway in 60's cars, but i'm not really very experienced with this sort of thing, not being a car thief and all :-)
They also did a bit of a messy job on the engine bay wiring, which has always annoyed me a bit
What sort of security do you guys run on your old cars?

as for the alarm system, if your going to get a new alarm wired in, then its just as easy for the fitter if you leave the old one in place.
if you just want it out (temporarily), then its really not too hard at all. get under the dash and find where the wiring has been spliced into (usually scotchlocks or chocolate block type terminals) and remove the extra wire, making sure to reconnect the original wires.
sometimes two circuits will be chopped and connected to each other, with an alarm wire connected to each ( these form immob circuit i believe) simply match the wiring colours and reconnect.
Sounds complicated, but once you get stuck in it soon becomes obvious what needs removing!

That's spot on, looks lovely. I do love Cortinas, mk 1 is such a nice shape. I had the same problem with the alarm on my 205, it was pretty easy to rip out, and like deanpompey says, just connect the same coloured wires back together;)

ok so she's been rather neglected for over a year now (or if i'm being honest, she's been a touch under used for even longer), but i've sold my silly hotrod, my lovely vw has now gone up in flames so it's time to focus and get the cortina sorted once and for all. she's being delivered to my new lockup tomorrow for a thorough investigation and so I can make a plan of attack. here's how she was looking last month. The plan is to sort out as much as i can manage myself, then get someone more talented to sort out the things that are too much for me. She may not be finished and perfect by the summer, but she will have an mot and be in use again rough plan: sand back and hammerite any minor rust for now, get anything serious sorted with replacement panels from the owner's club and cash given to someone with welding skills. do a basic service and get the engine running again check out the condition of the brakes, carb - service as needed. junk the old points and get an electronic ignition system (one that fits in the dizzy) rip out the alarm get some sort of fuse box fitted get someone to check out the fuel pipes / carb and get a new fire extinguisher - i didn't like what just happened to my other car very much - retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=75143&page=2get the alternator refurbished / figure out how to service it so it actually charges up the battery properly then drive her lots!

back down in sussex again now not too shabby really, for 11 years and 20k miles of my ownership just the sill, headlight, a bit of electrics, the odd piece of trim and some serious polishing and rustproofing action to be done then i can be cruising in 60's style again :-)

Finally got round to getting the cortina MOT'd and semi sorted after two years of storage - managed to get away with a new battery, small patch on the sill and some gaffer tape on the rusty headlight zone - been out enjoying the sunshine every weekend - had nearly forgotten how much fun she is to drive :-) here's the proof - actually outside a garage : (still quite tatty in a few places from close, will get a bit more sorted over the winter i hope)
