Alright guys, lurked around here for a while. Got a big project thread running on TMF but I'll start one here too, simply 'cause this is a really nice forum. I either want to turbo my current 998 now or upgrade to a bigger engine, which I probably will 'cause of motorway travelling. Quick background of me, 19 year old lad, studying Graphic Design at Lincoln Uni. Come from the Midlands though, near Leicester. My mini is my first car, so I'm learning to weld & spray myself. Keep costs down and use the skills I'll learn on future cars. History of the mini.. 1990 Checkmate, got it from Scotland back on the 28th of March 2008, drove it home with my Dad. Failed the MOT in March 09, and decided to take it off the road completely, do a full rebuild. Almost a year later now and she's getting there! Here she is at the start.. & here she is now.. So my final plans, + 10" GBs + 7.5 brake set up + FG 1 piece front + FG boot + Overhaul of rear subframe + Overhaul of front subframe + Mild overhaul of the engine + Total sort out of rust & a full respray

Came back again this weekend from Uni, which now stands at 4 weekends in a row! I won't be back again now till Easter, in which I hope to get started on the boot. Earlier this week I placed an order from MOSS, which had all the bits I needed to mate the gearbox with the block, get the timing chain cover, clutch housing etc.. all on. I thought I had a part at home, so I didn't bother ordering it.. well yeah, turns out I didn't have it and couldn't find it anywhere! It was the crescent shaped rubber seal that sits on the gearbox, towards the clutch side. So of course I couldn't do what I wanted to do. Engine and gearbox are ready to mate, will order that part for the Easter holidays. And so instead I found some other bits and bobs that needed doing.. When I took all my parts to be blasted and sprayed, they said they couldn't do this bit because of the rubber seal.. which I told them to remove, they apparently couldn't get it out.. so I just told them to leave it and said I'd do it in my own time. So popped it out and Ku-rusted.. Ku-rusted. Etch primed. Stone chip sprayed. Dry (obviously the other side was done too) Then I set about cleaning up the gear stick housing. Taken apart. Cleaned the parts up as best I could and found a jar of malt vinegar in the pantry, will leave them submerged until I come home at Easter. Etched. Sprayed and dried (sorry for blurred photo) So a good day, even though I didn't get what I wanted to get done. Still made some progress and did a good job of it. Patio heater is amazing for spraying things under, works a treat.

You`ve painted the inside of your timing case with stonechip?Aren`t you concerned about bits of paint gunk coming off and mixxing with your oil?

I did think about that, but I don't think the oil will interfere much?
Although to be on the safe side I could just nitromors the whole lot, wouldn't take much doing.

Great project and it looks like you're doing everything thoroughly and methodically especially the rear subframe! Its amazing how the costs of all the little nuts/bolts/gaskets/seals adds up to a huge amount. I really love your wheels by the way, I've been hunting for a minty set of 6x10 GBs for some time now, at the mo I have 6x10 BWA four-spokes that are quite unusual (the same make as yours) Just done the mk1 look to my '95 Cooper although I didn't go for the mk1 rear lights (went for mk2) as I wasn't keen on the idea that the rear panel would have loads of filler on it.

Cheers to all of the above As for colour.. it's between smoke grey, speedwell blue and maybe some retro green. Back from Uni for the weekend, don't know if I'll get any garage time done.. but I'll try and squeeze some in! I've got deadlines this coming week and the week after Alternator, bolts for fan & thermostat, threaded rocker studs, new set of HT leads. & this almost mint Smiths amp gauge which I won off ebay, £6!

I'm back home from Uni for a long weekend! Can spend alllllllllll of tomorrow and some of Saturday on her & I've been greeted with some lovely bits! Map light, either it's newly made or incredibly well kept and unused.. nice metal casing too. How my dashboard is shaping up, obviously it needs cutting down to shape and things will be jiggled around.. debating wether to keep my air vents and if i need a sound system at the moment, think it'll be a yes for both! so I need to work something out. & *drumroll* Panels! everything I need to sort the rear half out you see can see what is Heritage and what isn't. I'm over the moon with this lot! There is a full boot floor there as well, with a battery box! But it's a bit tricky getting photos in a dark room of something that's black! I'll get some better photos when they are welded in
