DAY1
ive just bought myself a ratty old crew cab that my friends owned for over ten years,he bought it as anex german army base service truck, so it had been well looked after and hadnt had an awfull lot of k,s on the clock. unfortunatly it had taken a a whack on the back corner which had pushed the cab corner in, so a new one was sourced and a new door(lhd not easy to find at the time).
last time it was on the road we took it down to newquay and back for run to the sun, TEN YEARS AGO! that was a helluva long trip in a 1.6d 4 speed! and its barely turned a wheel since. it has been started up regulaly up untill about 2 years ago when the starter motor packed up, the doors havnt been opened since.
I went down to to see it tother day and freed off the stuck brakes , easy enough and its rolling now still wont start tho, had the starter off and the solonoid is firing but its not spinning, so I guess ill need a recon one, I also refiited the interior while I was on and was pleased to find a full complement of seat belts fitted in the back.
here she is in all its scruffy glory, I have the front bumper and the missing drop side, need a new hinge welding on for that tho. its got some holes in the pick up bed, nothing too serious tho, it needs a sill on the passenger side but apart from that, everything else is just surface grot. the underside and chassis is spotless!
DAY2
had a good day today, went down to see the doka at her current home, fitted the new starter motor I picked up for it. took all of two minutes. why arent all starter motors that easy?
then there was no turning back, threw a spare battery on there, sucked some deisal up the feed pipe and spun her over. chug chug chug chug chug chug braaaaammm . sat and idled lovely, I was expecting the worst having not even been turned over for the last two years at least.
on applying a bit of throttle the alternator started screaming , I thought knackered/slipping belt but no, wrong kind of screraming. its coming from the rear alt bearing. so I pulled the alt off and was just about to strip it down when I spied the little hole on the back. hmm a bit of spray coppaslip thriugh the little hole and tadaaaa no more screaming and a healthy 13.9 volts on the multimeter.
RESULT!
in further news she sat running for two hours solid and it resulted in absolutley no problems whatsoever!!! just under half on the temp gauge, stat opened and close as it should.
went round the thing , doing mot style checks and everything seems peachy apart from my left hand side headlight, which has some corrosion on the bowl, probably enough to fail the test.
if any one has a spare one or pair, let me know asap please cos its booked for test next wednesday
jack
oh also found out I still owned a set of canny alloys, optional 16" rims from a vauxhall senator. bbs looking things. quite smart, been left in a mates shed since I sold my senny. I think there the same pcd as mercs so should just have to open the studs to m14 and ill be away!
