Right, so its eventually update time again....and the first of many to come, because I guy called MOTIVATION keeps following me around! Handbrake cables fitted and adjusted up so the car can be easily manoeuvred, temp set of rear shocks installed, everything fastened up, and A-Frame on!! But it gets cooler than that.... .... John trying to work out why theres no spark... and then off we went, towing the car to its new home in Huddersfield in Johns new garage, which I cant thank him enough for. Its a real motivator to be working with a decent amount of space, specialist equipment, and best of all a like minded volvo nutter (I'm Jel' of the paint on the 164 though ) Clicky vid Arrived at the garage - brother being helpful as usual.... This is a regular occurance at the garage... And since being moved, progress has already started! Flatted the boot for primer, and filled a couple of dents. Corrected a little ripple in the wing from when they were welded before thor got taken off the road... and sanded... I'm mega motivated. So much so that I want to do a million jobs at once! Ive also decided that as I'm a 24/7 skint apprentice, I'm going to put the custom/engine work to one side for a while and concentrate on bodywork. Bodywork is more labour intensive, and cheaper, which makes sense at the moment, and itll be much more motivating to spend money on the custom parts and the engine build once I have a bright orange 244 More very very soon! Steve

More progress... Because i am having the early chrome trim that does not wrap around the boot, i needed to smooth off the holes on the back wing and boot. Welded... Ground down... Sanded.... (also dent smoothed here) Filler... Sanded and etched...(also you can see i drilled a new hole right at the back of where the chrome trim will end) Steve

Today i started to modify the rear arches. This is slightly a copy of john h's idea, but i would have done szomething similar anyway. I am removing the inner arch and fitting a different style one higher up in the arch because a) It removed the rust that is currently developing inside the arch between the skins of metal and therefore removes the rust trap itself b) It porvides more room for bigger wheels and/or spacers (i want to try and make the front and rear track widths approximately the same - i think the standard 240 narrow axle looks odd) Obviously this is only the innitial cutting out, i need to trim and shape the cut edges some more. Big lump of scrap wheel arch! It really is a horrible horrible job to do. You have your head inside the wheel arch, with your hair pressed against the underseal, and with the grinder inches from your face and sparks flying all over. Long sleeves, goggles, and a hat are a must! Also put some stopper in the slight dent on the bonnet. More later, I'm working on the car today... Steve

Bit of an update Started to fill some of the slight warps on the boot. I could and should have avoided this by holding a damp cloth against the metal above where i was welding to dissipate the heat, but hey ho you live and learn. Got the door shuts nearly all flatted for primer, some rust spiders so ground to bare metal and etch primed. Bought the 2k primer Been refurbishing these for a friend too, which took quite a while today, but when it came to putting the primer on i also put some on the boot and the rear quarter of Thor... Should be some decent progress tomorrow. Steve

Update... Finished those wheels - proud of them! Got the door shuts finished off and flatted, and the rear quarter finished. Flatted everything and gave it another coat of primer. On to the roof. One thing that has been holding me up is that i need to joddle the joint where the new panel will be attached, but out conventional "bought" joddler will not work because the roof structure is very close to the outer skin, sometimes as little as 5mm. To get around this problem i made my own slimline joddler. Its not beautiful but it does the job it is intended for very well. Its made from a water pump wrench type thing cut and various layers of metal welded on to make it close up flat and create the joddled section. Got the edge to bare metal and neatened up the edge. Ive joddled the majority of it but no pic yet. Measured up and fitted the donor cross beam. welded... The B-pillar is a particularly weak point on the structure of the car, so I'm dong a few little modifications to strenthen it up and build it in as part of the structure of the car. At the moment its not much more than a door frame made a strengthening piece to join the roof beam to the roof structure and the b pillar more securely... I also started to put little brace pieces in across the beam as can be seen in this pic, but I'm changing this idea as there is still a lot more strength to be had by boxing the beam in completely. The braces don't really do much for strength from side to side of the car. More later

Right then, update! Well to say I'm happy would be an understatement! Thor has a roof!!! put some extra red oxide around the roof structure and poored some thinned waxoyl down some of the cavities My 3M panel bond arrived from the US Welded in some strengthening sections on the corners bonded on some peices of solid plastic as a second joint for the roof. these will take 80% of the load off the bonded joint. After the sealant had dried each one was ground down to just below the roof line level so as to make sure they didnt hold the roof too far up. when putting the roof on, they got a bead of sealant on top of them that would stick to the roof John (who i owe many beer tokens to!!) made a strengthening piece to go from frront to back out of the old roof (so we know the shape is right) to support the repair panel and make sure it bonds in the correct place/shape. This pic should show what is meant by joddling... Finalised the position of the panel and drilled holes for screws in each corner. These are just for locating purposes and will be removed when the bonding has set. Lots of cleaning and degreasing and final prep later, we mixed up the panel bond (quite scary at £40/200ml!) and put the roof on! Pics tell all really but its gone really well and the glue is impressive stuff! Oh and this is on the instructions for the panel bond... Mega pleased now - i feel like there are 4 or 5 "hurdles" to get past with the Thor project, and doing this roof swap was one of them. Ive never been so appreciative of a peice of sheet metal! I have the week off work, so progress should be good. Steve

Bit of an extra update... Got the excess glue ground off with the wire wheel... Bought a new paint stripper wheel and attacked the first 6" of the roof so that filler an be applied and shaping can start. Got all that done and also the top half of the o/s rear wing and c pillar. The whole roof will be taken to bare metal, ot to 95% correct shape, etch primed, 2k primed, corrected to 100% right, primed again and painted. This is what was left of the paint stripper wheel after! Then keyed up the metal and put some filler on More tomorrow! Steve

Quick update.... Got the paint stripped off the roof and starting to get there with the sanding of the filler. I pointed out to john earlier - "you know you're mega motivated when you just don't want to stop doing the job you hate the most" (aka sanding filler) Possibility of some primer tomorrow! Steve

I've been following your car since my days on the Volvo forum Steve. It's come a long way from being a tidy old 244 and, without wishing to sound patronising, I think you've come a long way with it too. One of the brilliant things about this website is seeing young lads learning to do things that I can't do at 41 rather than attaching fart cans to hatchbacks.
