I'm trying to find a decent supply of exhaust knuckles- as the normal exhaust flexi's only seem to last a couple of years before they fall apart. My old Citroen XM had a proper "knuckle" on it, where if it started to leak from wear - you just had to replace a sort of mesh "gasket", rather than weld in a whole new section. I've found them on this site: www.topgearstockport.com/products/stainless-steel-exhausts-lobglife/flex-joints.html?eprivacy=1But at £28.50 + VAT + P&P, that's more than an entire downpipe with flexi! And rather overpriced, considering the appearance of the build quality too (the bolts have a full-thread on them, and not a shoulder to tighten them up against so you don't over-squash the springs, losing all movement, as one observation) Example of the XM fitting kit, with PROPER securing bolts, and cups for spring location: Does anyone else know of another place that sells them at a cheaper price, or another alternative? Just fed up of these silly things falling apart

The only ones I have known of to last are the genuine items from Peugeot or Citroen stealers themselves. They were not near £30 mind you, more like £17 (for my 106 GTi) up to £24 (306 GTi-6). The pattern ones barely seem to last a year if I am honest.
Previously, my 106 leaked there and had an annoying squeak everytime I came off the throttle. It went away once that kit was fitted (although I fit a decat pipe at the same time...). The GTi-6 had a nasty resonance/leak everytime I hit 2500rpm which again dissappeared.
A knackered rear engine mount is not meant to help with these blowing, but on the basis that the 205 is not yet leaking (that was running a shot rear engine mount at one point) and neither did my 106 GTi (mounts were a little tired on that) I am not sure if I subscribe that point of view.

I've been peeking around, and I've found that indeed, the genuine "fitting kits" are only £17 from Citroen...but that still leaves me without flanges.
It appears I may be able to make my own. The "male" side is simple as anything - just have the exhaust pipe poke THROUGH the flange, by the thickness of the wire gasket - but I'm not sure just how difficult it will be to make a decent "female" side that will seal properly?

I think you'll find them in the back of a Bosal catalogue and available from motor factors etc?
Bought one this way though was a good few years back.

The link for flanges doesn't have what I need unfortunately (but now in my bookmarks!) As they're not "normal" flanges I have however, got an idea of how to make them fairly easily. Cut slits into the end of the pipe, weld into the required shape: And attach a simple 2-bolt flange, downstream of the newly flared end, to get a similar setup to this: The male end, as said - can just be made by having the pipe poke through the flange, by the thickness of the gasket. Currently chatting to a supplier for a suitably sized wire gasket So if it works out - an hour or so cutting, welding, and smoothing - two flanges - and a fitting kit.... to have a flexi-joint that will last the life of the exhaust! Cheers all

£57.29 for 2.5" in mild Though it does use a different name to search for rather than 'knuckle' which may be useful? As an aside, I quite like seeing that you drive cool old Triumphs to work when I look out of the window, from my desk, Nick

ben, you seem to have a bit of a stalker streak to yourself lol And yikes! That's DAMNED expensive!! And indeed, shoving the name "exhaust compensator" comes up with the correct style... but ONLY "jetex" ones, at ridiculous prices! I've found the name "exhaust ball joint" gets more hits on ye olde google. But even then, it still mostly refers to a style, more akin to flared brake nipples, than the type with a flexible mesh gasket

Ah, I thought you already had the join on the exhaust.
Jetex stuff is pricey I admit, but at least they are built better than most pattern curse word. If you are after the knuckles/ exhaust balljoint why don't you take a trip to the scrapyard with a hacksaw etc. and take it off an old French car? Or do you need a good supply for fitting them to a number of cars?

Just a quick observation: the cost of the Jetex one is £40 more than the fitting kit. Do you really value an hour of cutting, welding and grinding (including electricity, consumables, and materials) at less than £40? While the Jetex one isn't cheap, don't under-value your time.

If I was to buy it, it would push the cost of a downpipe up by £50 minimum, then the pipes and flanges. If I was doing it as a professional business venture, then sure.... but then the downpipes would also cost close to £300 each I don't think I'd sell very many lol Plus, I'm a student, so I've got LOADS of free time
